This may not exactly mean the end of knee-high socks as we know them, but one thing is for sure: they might have to make room for a new style on the block. Ankle socks are peeking out over ankle boots as part of winter, spring and summer outfits. Versatility? Check.
Here is the scenario: You haven’t painted your toe nails in a week and you’re looking a little, dare I say, crusty. Summer gives you so little options when it comes to donning your beloved boots. One choice is to sweat it out, commando style: foot edition. The other is to brave the heat, knee socks pulled up with a confidence that fades as quickly as your foundation in the sun.
Enter cute little ankle socks peeking their fuzzy little heads out from your boots.
lydia, _ANITA and darlingdarling are the inspiration behind this trend. I couldn’t say enough good things about these girls who all have such a command over their personal styles and a great attitude to match. Check out their blogs to see what other inventive styles they may have, in lydia’s case, under a perfectly rolled sleeve.
Hey Uglies!
So I know what you’re thinking: But underwear IS innerwear, right? Right. But I’m not talking about bras and underwear. I’m talking slips, camis, and bloomers/bum covers. Yes, that’s right, the more esoteric underwear needs its time in the spotlight also.
Now before you decide that such underwear is just for old ladies and vintage dressers, think again! Why? SHEER fabrics! Sheerness has been huge on the runway and in reality lately and It looks amazingly ethereal or edgy depending on context. Only problem is that you have to wear something underneath (going commando is totally NOT AN OPTION). So let me introduce you to a few options.
Slips
A slip is a sheer-lover’s best friend! It’s basic, it’s discreet, and it’s incredibly versatile! Nude ones that match your skin tone fairly closely make it super easy to wear sheer dresses, skirts, and tops without making “tan lines,” which is what I call the color differences between where your slip ends and your skin begins. Under some clothing though, you’ll want to look like you have something underneath, so it’d be worthwhile to get one in black, white, or a nice color so it doesn’t look like you’re going commando — that kind of defeats the purpose of wearing a slip.
Slips are also useful under dresses and skirts that are unlined, so you won’t get any awkward bunching between your legs when you walk (wind + unlined skirt = semi cameltoe) or VPL. They’re also necessary during the fall to keep your skirts from sticking to your tights. If any of this has happened to you, then get one and observe in amazement as your awkward moments sharply decrease from then on out!
My picks: Utilitarian nude – Barenecessities.com, Girly blue lace – Anthropologie, Sheer pleated black – Urban Outfitters.
Half Slips
They’re the same as slips but, as the name implies, are halved. Super useful under skirts with perhaps a lacy edge just peeking out or even as a skirt with another slip underneath! All of the lack of embarrassment as a slip with all the comfort of not wearing yet another layer on top. Plus, letting a bit of lace peek out from under the edge of your dressyour dress is super chic.
My picks: Basic white lace – Barenecessities.com, Fancy blue with lace – Anthropologie, Stretchy “shaping” black – Spanx.
Camis
I’m of the opinion that every girl needs a good nude cami for sheer or lacy tops. Or maybe that’s just me because I’m partial to anything of that ilk (ruffles too, please!). A nice nude colored one is, as always, a good thing to have around, but since camis have become pretty much appropriate for normal outdoor wear, it’s pretty easy to find more than a few super cute options.
My picks: Basic nude – Anthropologie, Lacy black bustier – Anthropologie, Amazing lace – Urban Outfitters
Bum Covers
Last but definitely not least, bum covers are a constant must-have for me — mostly after a few scarring incidences of seeing far too much of a miniskirt-clad girl’s thong-cleaved derierre on blustery days. Knowing I’d never want to be in her place, I always opt for a pair of discreet short-shorts (which I dubbed “bum-covers”) under shorter skirts and dresses. Something basic and tight-fitting generally does the trick. I opt for nude or white-ish since those colors won’t show under my skirt, but you could wear neon so no one will dare think they caught a peek of your bum!
My picks: nude bike shorts, lavender high-waist shorts, neon yellow shorts — all American Apparel.
That’s it, uglies! There are so many ways of staying covered up that I’ll no longer feel sorry for any of you where VPL awkwardness is concerned. Take care!

Hi friends. Pascal Grob (PascalG), one of last month’s Style Icons, is climbing the ranks of male style inspiration and becoming an instant favorite, definitely someone we wanted to hear more from. With his impeccable taste and mature sense of self, he has become a constant source of inspiration both in the fashion and photography regard. His outfits are both relaxed and crisp and are arguably timeless. The same can be said about his vibrant photography of friends, events and street style.
We’ve asked Pascal, what inspires you?
—
Many things can inspire you. People on the street, fashion blogs, fashion magazines and their editorials, friends, single garments – this list could go on and on. I was asked to write an article about what inspires me in terms of fashion as a guy. I’ve actually never really thought about this question or even realized what it was, that inspires me to dress the way I do.
My interest in fashion developed about 8 months ago. Basically, it means I started to care what I was wearing and spent more thoughts about clothes than before. I don’t remember where that interest suddenly came from. I can only assume that I was thinking (and still do) that well-dressed people just look more interesting when you see them on the streets at first sight. I admire them and it even makes me kind of happy to spot such people. And I’m not saying that not well-dressed people aren’t interesting, it’s just the first impression for me when I see someone. On the other hand it could also be that some fashionista bores you to death when you get to know them.
Switzerland isn’t really known to be a fashionable country. Actually, fashion isn’t big at all in our small country, so I need to get inspired somewhere else than by the people on the street. All the fashion and streetstyle blogs are definitely my number one source of inspiration. I’m currently subscribed to over 160 blogs with my Google Reader and I’m adding more every month. While streetstyle blogs also feature looks by guys, they often have many more entries about looks by women. But it’s not like I’m only looking for pictures of guys on their blogs, I also take a close look at women if their outfit appeal to me. It’s more about the colour and type of fabric/garment combinations of their outfits. The combination of the right colours is an essential key to a good outfit and you can give it all a twist by playing with different kinds of fabric. Since I’ve already developed an own style more or less, that I’m feeling really comfortable with, I obviously can’t just exactly copy an outfit and no one should do that.
I probably spend one or two hours a day just to read all the new entries of blogs in my reader. In addition to that I’m often just looking fashion-related things up on the internet (collections, archives of streetstyle blogs, information about certain brands, etc.).
Other sources of inspiration besides blogs could be fashion community sites (like this one) or fashion magazines with exceptional fashion editorials. To give you an example: I’ve recently discovered a fashion editorial in an issue of Vogue Hommes Japan called “Story of an Eastern Dandy”, where I spotted the idea of using old book pages as a pocket square in your blazer instead of the usual ones.
I’m sharing photos of my looks on this community and my blog to be part of this big source of inspiration. There are so many more girls than boys active on the internet, that we can be happy about every male person trying to contribute something as well. But actually, there was another personal reason why I started posting looks of mine: Swiss can be fashionable too! Haha.
Hello Chictopians! It is such an honor for me to contribute to the World Ugly Blog. Chictopia has given me so much inspiration, especially on days when I have no idea what to wear, and it has made me more creative with my outfits. It also gave me a lot of opportunities such as being featured in International fashion sites and of course, being able to contribute to this blog. I would like to share with you the outfits that I will be wearing this season. For me, all these outfits are a reflection of who I am and what my outfits are: unpredictable, classic with a twist and fun. I also think that these six pieces that I will be sharing with you can withstand season after season and can be worn in so many different ways. Fashion is not merely about following trends, it is being wise especially now because of the Recession. Spend your money on pieces that will boost your confidence and make you feel classic because as Nina Garcia (one of my fashion inspirations) said it: “There is no substitute for feeling this way, ever.”
1. Animal Prints+ Liquid Skirt
This outfit screams fierce, don’t you think? I am not really a fan of wearing animal prints but this sheer dress worn as a top is just irresistible and lately, I have been more daring and experimental with my outfits. Nina Garcia, in her book, The 100, also said that, “those who are truly fashionable are always daring and never dull and that an animal print outfit paves way for one to be bold. It allows you to throw in that slight element of danger on an otherwise safe outfit and let the world know that there is more to you than meets the eye”
The liquid skirt is kind of tricky to pull off, as you do not want to end up looking trashy and slutty at the same time. My philosophy is that if you are wearing short skirts, wear a loose top, or tops with sleeves so that the outfit is balanced.

2. Floral Dresses
This was actually a long dress from my mom that I altered. Floral dresses are just in right now and can be worn with a blazer, a vest and can be dressed down by wearing flats/sandals and can look glam in an instant by wearing heels. I love that flowery prints/dresses can make one look sweet and fierce at the same time. There are so many stores that offers a lot of pretty floral dresses (Topshop, H&M, Zara, Mango, thrift stores and of course, your mom or Grandmom’s closet)

3. Studded Skirt
This is my favorite skirt right now. I have worn this three times already and people always tell me that they love this. It is so Balmain and everyone loves anything Balmain. Because the skirt itself speaks volumes already, I just paired it with a simple white tanktop. This can be worn with a plain jacket, boyfriend shirt, can be worn during the day with flats and perfect for night outs!

4. Fringes
I love this top/dress because it is so fun and classic at the same time. I love that it reminds me of Rumi, also one of my inspirations.

5. Blazers
I love blazers. In fact, I have it in red, orange, yellow, blue, black, striped, and animal printed. It is just hard to wear especially because the weather can be very unpredictable. But then again, you can wear this with a dress to look laid back and fabulous at the same time, can be worn on days when you are rushing and still want to look bold and fashionable, can be worn to work and it can easily spice up or tone down the outfit.

6. SHOES
My number one addiction would be shoes. It can easily make any outfit look smashing by wearing the perfect shoes. I rely on International sites such as Go Jane, Cutesygirl.com and even multiply sites for all my heels.
So there you have it, my key items for this season. I hope I was able to inspire you the same way that all of you guys have inspired me. J Xoxo!!
Hiiiiiiiiiii Uglies!

Having lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest, summer for me is pretty mild—certainly never unbearably hot. However, after spending a week on vacation in Tennessee during a heat wave, I have a much greater appreciation of what summer means for most of the rest of the country.
When it’s 103 degrees outside, you probably don’t even want to think about putting on clothes. Thus, when you finally do have to leave the house, it’s far too easy to just throw on your lightest tank top, shortest denim shorts and those flip-flops that you claim to have only for wearing around the house and to the beach, but that seem to make it out onto the streets a little too often. I know this temptation. Don’t give in! (See picture #2—that is me wearing this outfit along with my extremely sad/confused face.)
Fortunately, making this into a real outfit is a fairly easy fix:
1. Trade the flip-flops for real shoes! Sandals or summer-y flats should do the trick.
2. Tuck in the tank to show off your high-waisted shorts (optional).
3. Most importantly, throw something lightweight on top of it.
Now you’re complaining that it’s 103 degrees and you can’t possibly wear something else on top! This is the cry of an uncreative dresser. That is why SHEER fabrics were created! If you can see straight through it (a la picture #3), it’s probably not going to add any heat to your outfit. Personally, I opted for a sheer polka dot button down with puffy sleeves worn tied at the waist (see picture #1), but you can also go for sheer cardigans, scarves, tanks, etc. That’s right—whatever your heart desires! It’s really easy to do and your outfit will probably fit your individual style better (i.e. be less generic) than if you had just left the house in the tank top and shorts.
If you’re feeling particularly creative, you can try wearing a sheer skirt as a cape (a la queenelizabeth-) or throw on an oversized sheer floral dress (like Wendy).
Don’t know where to start looking for sheer clothes? You could look at the multitude of designer lines with sheer pieces, but the thrift store always seems to have a good supply at ridiculously low prices and don’t forget to check mom’s closet—you never know what kind of sheer goodness she might be hiding away.
So no more plain old tank top and denim shorts, RIGHT?
