How to dress for casual - men   Add as Favorite Photo

Rumi and I were discussing her dilemma of having to dress her boyfriend. She said that part of the problem was that she didn’t really know HOW to dress a man – where to begin?

Do you ever look at your boyfriend and go… “man, why don’t you dress better? Why don’t you look as good as ME?” Because I do… to other people’s boyfriends ALL THE TIME.

I put together some of my favorite and more easy to understand casual looks for men on here. And a few tips:

Black jeans can do wonders – You can either go super slim like the beef or a more relaxed rocker fit like ejay but either way, “dis look pretty gooood.”

Easing your way in – If your boy is none too comfortable taking the skinny jean, combat boot, Ann D./ Rick Owens hardcore fashion-head route. Easing their way into looking better via some nice shades like thatsit, an attractive carryall like zainalafnan, and some basic layering like mrclick can be another option. Everybody needs to start somewhere.

The slimmer the better – Men like to argue this point with me a lot. I win, always. The best way to appear slimmer is to wear pants that sit closer to the body. Having big ass pants doesn’t mean you have a big penis. Come on, now.

Happy make-overing!

Step 1: Starting out on Chictopia.

As a lot of you know, many of our top users here at Chictopia have been featured by top publications. From Teen Vogue, Elle Girl, to The Washington Post, many of our top bloggers have made a name for themselves through participating in the most reputable fashion community on the internet.

So to help out our starters, here are some tips on getting more fans and views.

1. How to accumulate more fans

Invite your friends to join. Stumble your blog, add it to your Facebook profile. Get your friends and family to support your cause here on Chictopia. Every month, users who accumulate the most amount of fans become our Style Icon. Not only do you get perks like prizes, we also mention your name in our magazine write-ups.

Stumble or Buzz other articles you think are note-worthy too. For example: many of you enjoyed Lydia’s recent guest blogger entry. A great way to support your fellow blogger’s job well done is to use the buttons at the bottom of the entry’s photo.

2. How to make it into the Style Gallery

Take clear pictures. Camera pointing in the mirror generally does not cut it.

3. How to get noticed by other users

Tag properly. The more you tag, the more other users will be able to browse/search to get to you. Brands, colors, where you get your items will all help.

Post constructive comments to other users – we all know what this means, right?

Thanks for all your support in helping make Chictopia an influential community. Never did the collective power of fashionable girls become so influential, and our community here at Chictopia is leading the way in making this the new fashion progression, one buzz/stumble/click at a time.

Unlike most other style sharing sites out there ahem... we are not just about showing off pretty pictures (ok, maybe a little). But we also try and help you dress better. We do this by connecting you to people by your shape and size.

Meet Lydia, if you haven’t seen her lovely smile in our style gallery, I hope you find what she has to say useful to you.

I couldn’t think of a better example of a girl who dresses so complimentary to her figure. And she’s cute as a button!

xoxo, Lulu

How to dress for a Fuller Figure

Clicking through the style gallery, a girl might feel a little less then perfect surrounded by lithe fashionistas. But have no fear! Being stylish is within reach to those who aren’t a size 2 =D Curves are a blessing (boys love them after all) and you should embrace them. It may be a little tricky to decipher what to wear when it comes to trends, proportions and what looks good on you. Great style isn’t just about being modelesque or wasp thin, it’s pulling off a look that’s right for you with confidence. Here are some tips to dressing curves!

1. Figure out your shape. Knowing the shape of your body will help you figure out what will work best on you. For example, being the pear shape that I am, flapperesque, drop waist dresses are a major no. Pearshapes ( small on top, heavy on bottom), lend themselves well to fuller A-line skirts, tighter fitting tops and empire waisted dresses. Hourglasses (balanced hips and bust) look great in pencil skirts, wiggle dresses and anything that looks like it’s from the 1950’s. Apple (wieght carried most at tummy) rock skinny jeans, billowy tops and boho dresses. Boyish figures (broad shouldered, narrow hips and bust) are perfect for straight jeans, dropwaists and jumper dresses.

2. Use COLOR. Don’t be afraid!!! Patterns and colors can be used to hide and flaunt, helping highlight your favourite parts and diminish those not so favourites…. Most of my bottoms are dark (save for a couple light shorts and skirts). Blessed/cursed with a heavyset bottom (read: Ghetto Booty), dark jeans and skirts are well balanced with light tops; they also make me look like I have shoulders! Another way to wear color is solid, all over color. It can be super flattering with the right sillouhette (e.i. Hourglass in a red 40’s shape dress). As a plus, color & patterns are generally super fun to wear.

3. Accessories. I’m sure you’ve heard it before but they are KEY. Regardless your size, this is what sets apart a so-so outfit from a sweet & chic one. This is also where most personal style comes from, adding key elements that set you apart from the crowd. Add scarves, necklaces, bows (my favourite) and ties to give outfits that extra ‘pop’. Which is not to be confused with Pop Belts=Best. Thing. Ever. Seriously, I couldn’t live without them. I’d die. And suspenders rock too.

4.Things to Avoid. A couple of trends to probably steer clear of: Bandage anything, overly revealing anything, (for the most part) bottoms which have zero stretch, crop tops (but that kind of applies to everyone).

The most important rule…

4. BE CONFIDENT. Really, it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing if you look uncomfortable/like you aren’t feeling it. Confidence=2000000x cuter. Obvs. Don’t worry too much about what everyone thinks because chances are, they aren’t as critical as you think they are. Oh, and wear what you like! If you love something, it shouldn’t matter if it follows any of these ‘rules’, because you’ll look great because you love it. With the exception of a muumuu. But no one looks good in a muumuu.

hugs, Lydia

How to dress for comfort   Add as Favorite Photo

Someone once told me, jeans were the most comfortable thing in the world. This is, of course, incorrect. Let’s consider the hierarchy:

bandage dress < jeans < leggings

I knew a guy in college who used to rank Asian chicks in terms of hotness in the same way:

Japanese < Chinese < Koreans

Back to the topic. When dressing for comfort, it’s important to consider all your options. Sure, you could put on jeans and hoodie. But have you ever considered leggings, over-the-knee boots, and a hoodie? Or an oversized sweater, leggings/ tights, and boots?

Putting in that extra effort is what will give you that extra boost of confidence when walking around doing what you do. Incorporate trends like over-the-knee boots, or “sweater as dress” that will work well with casual attire (see Alexander Wang a/w 07 collection) – when you break it down, it’s boots and a sweater. Easy enough, right?

Finally, hair, makeup, and jewelry do wonders to communicate to people that you did mean to walk out the door looking like that. And it’ll make you feel a bit more assured in your comfort outfit. Hey, if drag queens can do it, you can do it too.

In case anyone was wondering: I’m in a lighthouse. I’ve had too many Coronas. Ideally, I would like to be more of a role model. But that’s why you guys have Coed Ugly and now… dun dun dun Teen Ugly!

Wtf: Things I don't understand - TheSundayBest   Add as Favorite Photo

And now a few things from the men’s side that hurt my brain.

The blazer with hoodie attached – A while back the hoodie faction and the blazer faction got together and started wearing both at the same time. And then someone had a brainstorm and wondered, what if we took this already questionable look and fused it together as a single garment? That would remove the functionality of both! And then people would no longer have to choose which blazer went with which hoodie! Shortly after making it, the creator’s head collapsed from emptiness.

Geox – I am wary to tar an entire company with the same brush. I understand a lot of people wear these shoes (stores have been popping up all over Vancouver). It sold 21 million shoes worldwide in 2007. So clearly someone likes them. But I have to ask those people this – you do know they’re really ugly, right? I mean…you know that and don’t care, like the Crocs people…right?

Wearing dress shirts untucked – Hey there, untucked shirt guy. I like to wear my shirts untucked too. It’s liberating and nicely casual on a warm spring day. But do you see how the back of your shirt is so much longer than the front? That’s because it’s a dress shirt and is made to stay tucked in when you lean over. Another clue is that your shirt completely covers your ass.

The sleeveless t-shirt – Wow, it sure can get hot during the summer, can’t it? I don’t mean while you’re playing sports. I mean just when you’re standing around, or walking around town, or eating in a restaurant and putting your hands behind your head. It gets so hot that you start to thinking, if only I could cut the sleeves off my t-shirt I’d be so much more comfortable. What a great idea! Just cut those sleeves off and expose that extra 3 inches of flesh to the cooling, cooling sun. Oh man, that is so much better. The only drawback is looking like a complete berk. (Some people call this a muscle shirt. It isn’t. It’s a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off.)

How to wear: Geek glasses   Add as Favorite Photo

I see a lot of discussion in our forum about the topic of geek glasses. To be fair, my glasses are actually my real eyeglasses. I took the sunglasses lense out of my Wayfarers and just put in prescription ones. Works pretty well.

In case you wanted to try this at home, glasses are relatively easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. Here’s a few simple tips to get you started:

1. What are geek glasses? – There’s a difference between “geek” versus just rectangular black rimmed glasses. For this look to be successful, the bigger the better! Or until it eats your face. That’s not chic.

2. Light on top – Lipstick, glasses, and a white or light colored top is a fun way to bring attention to your upper body. And you can even mix softer, girlier tops like gobaby’s and Rissa’s for an extra eye-catching effect.

3. Girl-y works too – Don’t be afraid to mix geek glasses with more feminine florals, like dresses. A pretty vintage dress and glasses is a great go-to look – as seen so fetchingly on Snowshoe .

4. Yes, this was intentional – Finally, be comfortable in this very obviously trendy item. My favorite is to just put them on in front of people, ask “Hey, do you like my glasses?”, and wait for their reaction.
