The bright color caught the attention of everyone on the street. Though the jeans had the same basic style as the rest of those that had taken the kingdom by storm over the recent months—made out of denim, pockets on the sides and back, and convenient belt loops—these jeans were hot pink, a vivid shade meant to stand out.
The young woman wearing them paced in front of a brick building while people watched curiously, until finally the doors opened and a young man in indigo robes and sunglasses rushed down the steps to meet her.
“Ah, Miss Salazar,” Dr. Raines greeted her, bowing with a flourish. He had once known her first name, when she had just arrived at the capital to attend the prestigious university of wizards, but she had insisted that people call her by her surname. Now, after she had risen in prominence among her classmates, people across the city had heard of the wizard Salazar. “What can I do for you today?”
She adjusted her glasses. “I’m very sorry to take you from your work, Dr. Raines. This won’t take long.”
“I know you wouldn’t have requested my help unless it was important.” He glanced from side to side. “We seem to be attracting an audience. Shall we go inside?”
“Thank you,” she said with a nod, following him up the steps to the doors.
