Thrift shopping: If you’ve done it before, chances are you love it. If you think you hate it, you probably haven’t done it before. Thrifting goes beyond our average shopping experience because it invites us into an uncharted ground of vintage treasures and buried goods that are unlike anything we’d find in major retail stores. As long as you go in with an open mind and lots of time, you’ll quickly discover that secondhand doesn’t always mean second-rate.
Here are the top 5 reasons for hitting up your local thrift store this weekend:
One-of-a-kind items. An MTV Jams t-shirt straight from the 90’s. Palm tree-printed high-waist Versace jeans. A retro Mickey Mouse bomber jacket. For the adventurous and outgoing, the magic of thrifting comes from the fact that a lot of the things you find are most often the only ones of their kind.
Ballin’ on a budget. Let’s face it – no one can resist a good discount. Thrifting gives you the thrilling opportunity to buy designer finds at a mere fraction of their original price, denim for under $10 and sweaters for a spare change. There’s no better way to keep your wallet happy and your closet full!
Environmentally friendly. This industry thrives on reusing and recycling clothes, accessories, furniture and more, so shop with the comfort of knowing that you’re helping to reduce the impact of waste on the environment.
Costume attire and funny finds. Whether you’re shopping for gag gifts or your next Halloween costume, almost every thrift store you wander into will have some variation of extravagant prom outfits, t-shirts with obscure phrases and glittery flapper dresses straight from the Roaring Twenties.
Creative stylist’s goldmine. Browsing through racks of vintage ensembles is like jumping into a fashion time machine. Not only do you get a hands-on look at what our couture-conscious predecessors wore, but you also get to think about re-purposing vintage finds into modern, wearable pieces or for personal design projects.
Some of my favorite thrift stores with locations around the nation are Goodwill and The Salvation Army. If you live in California, Wasteland and Thrift Town are two hot spots worth checking out as well. Good luck and happy hunting!
