If you’re a Chictopia user with an eye for details, you may have noticed that the cat that welcomes you back to community every time you log in, is also the star of the Chictopia App. This, friends, is no coincidence. Rest assured, this cat is no plebeian, but what’s its story? I had the pleasure of interviewing Helen, one of the three co-founders of Chictopia, and she indulged me in my nosiness. The mysteries of the Chictopia cat, unveiled!
So, why a cat? What’s the story behind this magical creature?
Well, the founders of Chictopia share two passions – fashion and cats. When we first starting thinking about taking on a startup, we researched the pet space as well as the fashion space. We saw more for us to do in the fashion space, so we started Chictopia. We thought it would only be right to find a way to include our cat, who’s been supporting us for all these years by looking chic and acting cuddly every moment of every day.
The cat is an honorary founding father! Sweet. Does the Chictopia muse have a name?
His name is Mango.
What inspired the name?
I’ve always wanted a large orange cat, before I got Mango. I had the name picked out, and even though Mango turned out to have a white coat, the name still suit him. I tend to personify things, and in my mind, the fruit, mango, is sweet with an attitude. The cat, Mango, is definitely fit for such a name.
Seeing that Mango is the mascot of the Chictopia community, I have no doubt he is a sartorial wunderkind. How would you describe his style?
His style is fun and experimental. He has a different haircut every season. Mango’s definitely not a wallflower.
What hair is he rocking this season?
A geometric cut, with sharp straight cuts around his face.
Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a cat with such stylish grooming. He’s definitely earned got the street cred to be a style icon. What’s a day like then, in the life of one of Chictopia’s finest?
Well, he’s an early riser. He gets up at 6am to watch the sunrise from the kitchen table. Then, he grooms himself, comes back to his parents’ bed around 7am and meows for some attention. After inevitably waking up his parents and getting petted for a full 15 minutes, he heads back to bed. From this point on, he sinks into a deep sleep until about 7pm, when his parents come home from work. He comes out to greet, always with his signature cat strut, before flopping on the floor for some more petting. After another petting session, he eats, gets back on the couch and settles into a period of contemplation. Once he done pondering life, he’s ready for his evening workout, which consists of trying to frantically trying to catch a fake bird for a half hour. After he gets tired out, he gets pretty for bed, and catches more beauty sleep. Thus concludes the day in the life of Mango.
I’m sure the 30 minutes of anaerobic cardio every day has him looking fashion week ready all the time. Chasing psuedo-birds is not for the faint hearted. Does Mango have a favorite designer?
Yes, his favorite designer would probably have to be American Apparel. He sits on my American Apparel garments all day long. Especially if they’re black.
Speaking of sleeping in, or in this case, on, American Apparel, they really should start doing bedding. That’s a gold mine waiting to happen…
Actually, American Apparel does do bedsheets. I own one. A more accurate statement would probably be that Mango owns it. It’s his favorite.
Does Mango have any trend forecasts for us, for the coming seasons?
Well, these days he’s really into vegan leather. A huge animal rights advocate, this one. He sniffs around all my pleather skirts and tops quite a bit. He’s also big on studs. I have a pair of studded pony hair black loafers that he uses as a backscratcher all the time.
Wow, Mango lives large. Is there any way we can see more of this fancy cat?
Great! Can’t wait to see his haircut.
Thanks for chatting with us Helen, and tell Mango we say hi!
