Yo, I tell you what I want, what I really really want: I want y’all to Spice Up Your Life during your summer holiday. This season, resort collections are giving a sartorial salute to Spice World. More specifically, Sporty Spice. With everything from visors to bermuda shorts, this season your Spirit Spice (you know, like a spirit animal) shall be Mel C. While this is no call to action to get inked 11 times, it is to say that now’s prime time to sport a high pony and track pants like it’s nobody’s business. To help you in your journey in becoming one with your inner Sporty Spice, here’s some styling cues inspired by resort runways:
1) Mesh and Other Perforations
If mesh fabric were a kid in school, it would be the social butterfly. Mesh can hang with the punks, and fraternize with the jocks. It’s been the golden child of the recent punk revival , but it’s also been been making cameos on runways as the +1 to trousers and shift dresses. Mesh is a great layering piece, and provides breathability, while still fending off those UV rays. It packs light in your suitcase, can become fast friends with nearly any fabric, from denim to velvet, and keeps you from looking (too much like) a lobster after spending a day frolicking under the sun. What more could you ask for?
2) Wide Brimmed Visors
Meet the floppy sunhat’s more athletically inclined twin. It’s the standard sun hat, without the top cap, and with the addition of a grip tape or elastic closure. Now, you can do the signature Sporty Spice karate inspired dance routines without worrying about messing up the meticulous placement of le chapeau. Love it when practicality and style come together. You can don these hats with a blouse and trousers, a la Phillip Lim, or, on a lazy day, an easy sundress.
3) Dolphin Hems on Skirts and Dresses
Dolphin cut shorts had their heyday a few seasons ago. I speculate that their shorter shelf life may had to do with their similarity to something one would have seen on the set of the “Let’s Get Physical” video shoot. Regardless, this season, the dolphin hem has found a more sartorially compatible silhouette, and is back for round two. This time, they’ve joined with skirts and dresses. This hemline adds an athletic wear inspired spin on an otherwise girly silhouette. Juxtaposition wins again.
4) Bermuda Shorts
I got to give it bermuda shorts for their relentlessness in pursuing style cred. Although bermuda wearers are still most often spotted on the golf course, they haven’t given up in their pursuit for a moment in the limelight. This Resort season, they’re getting paid a fair amount of attention. Wide crops and slim fitted bermudas have been sighted on the runways of Balenciaga, Victor and Rolf, and Vera Wang, among others. Yes, bermudas can cut the leg at a length that’s not always the most flattering, and I would not suggest wearing bermudas with flat shoes unless you’ve got gams like Giselle, but heels are very good at playing optical illusions. Coupled with heels, and a shirt tuck or crop trop, we’re in business.
There you have it, four closet/suitcase additions to consider for your next vacation. A little runway, a little spice, a lot of functionality. As an added bonus, for those on that cardio and strength training grind, think of this as dressing for success. Dress like Mel C., feel like Mel C., look like Mel C.? I’d say it’s worth a shot. Until next time, Chictopians, zigzag ah.
