Haha, I've already wasted money on the American Apparel acid wash (a ton of it actually) but I will definitely not spend a dime doing this as well :P

Im going to try this on some jeans tomorrow, but with like, mega bleach. haha. thanks for the instructions, i love the outfit, the high waisted jeans look awesome since your legs are tiny, lol.

i just tried this, amazing fun. however, my bleach went on so much stronger, and wouldn't fade in no matter how much i rubbed. On some, it left big sploches instead of more of a 'wash'. tips for this, has this ever happened to you? still loved the effect, though. super easy & cheap, which is a total plus. ;)

yeah, you need to use 'household bleach' rather than 'thick bleach'... i don;t discovered the difference recently. if you check my personal chictopia blog you can see some jeans i made using the thick bleach. even better than the acid wash if you ask me.

i was just wondering whether you know what colour t-shirt to use if i wanted a grey/black grainy affect on the tee shirt. i see your one above turned a little brown/grey looking so i am a little confused
BritUgly
BritUgly on August 06
hey, i'm not too sure. i think the black fades to brown rather than grey. could try it with a dark grey t-shirt and see what happened. you'll have to experiment!

what kind of bleach did u use for ur shirt? cuz ur shirt has a cool grey-ish off black look..and when i did it mine turned splotchy orange =/ ew. lol... i guess clorox sucks? lol..
BritUgly
BritUgly on August 05
the bleach may have been too strong. if you don't have the weaker 'household bleach' you could try diluting it. good luck!

I actually tried it! but I think the UK has some intensely concentrated bleach, because I left my bleach in for half an hour and there was BARELY any color change.

ah that's a shame! maybe leave for an hour or two...

This tutorial is a fucking lifesaver. I acidwashed some Primark leggings yesterday and admittedly they look a little hippy and cirque-du-so-lame, but fuck it, I like them anyway.

How to ACID WASH (aka D.I.Y for dummies)   Add as Favorite Photo

Rocker Style, best suited for a Going to a Bar
Jul 09, 2008

I’m sure you all loved rat pack’s amazing tutorial on how to make a bandage dress. I can’t wait to see the evidence of readers making their own.

But for those who are too skint, ill equipped or just lazy to attempt such a project, there’s another way to tap into one of this seasons biggest trends, ACID WASH.

Don’t waste your money on the American Apparel acid wash tees. This DIY honestly takes absolutely no skill and it won’t cost you a single penny.

Online tutorials will tell you to use no end of weird and expensive materials to do a DIY acid wash. I discovered that you really don’t need any of these.

You need

Your garment.
Household bleach.
Rubber gloves or similar to protect your hands.
erm… THAT’S IT!

I used an old black t-shirt I found lying around (see the second photo). I’d expect you get an even better result on brightly coloured garments. I really can’t wait to do some more.

What you need to do

Wet it: Take your garment and get it wet through in the bath or sink, then ring some of the water out.

Bleach it: Take your bleach and squirt it liberally on random areas of your t-shirt, leaving some bits uncovered. Rub the bleach in slightly, scrunch the t-shirt up a bit, squirt on some more bleach if you like.

Leave it: Leave to soak in but keep checking the colour every minute or so until you are happy with it. (I left mine for 10 min )

Rinse it: When happy with the colour, rinse off the bleach and then throw your garment in the washing machine for a cycle.

Remove. Dry. Done!

Now my plain black t-shirt has turned a weird acid brown and grey colour. But hey, it’s fashion, kids. Don’t knock it.

I also cut the sleeves a bit. Rock on.
