They’re baaaack. The Birkenstock, the it-shoe to hate, is the favorite shoe for designers this spring. (Crocs will have their moment in the sun too, just wait. It’s happenin’.)
Birkenstocks’ clumsy, clunky look pairs well with the more relaxed, minimal vibes happening right now and we’re sorta into that. According to The Daily Beast, so is everybody else. Vile buckled footwear lined with mink fur? Yes, please.
We tried scouring the Style Gallery for like-minded Chictopians who enjoy a bit of ugly shoe game, but no luck. Shhh, just go along with it. Seriously go get some Birkenstocks. Here’s why they’re the coolest shoes around:
1. Athletic Couture – Okay, this buzz phrase is really stupid but let’s get into it. After clairvoyant brands like Prada started sport labels in the late ’90s, the growing influence of functional athletic-influenced design has grown exponentially within the past decade. Slip-on Adidas or Nike sandals have been a mainstay on the menswear runways for the past few seasons and they’re not slowing down. This spring, at Celine, Phoebe Philo gave Birkenstocks a mink makeover.
2. Parent Trap – Are we going to pretend like the mom jean or awkward dad proportions aren’t all over the place right now? Reinventing those classically confusing items from mom and dad’s wardrobes that litter thrift stores takes it to a new context. They add a fresh vibe to a look you’ve grown tired of. Sorta grunge, sorta grandpa.
3. They’re kinda comfortable – Birkenstocks are a cozy alternative to spiky heels. Who cares what Louboutin and Jimmy Choo say, really? We just want some comfy shoes. Relaxation feels right for 2013.
→ Skirts and dresses might feel too prim sometimes. These sandals add a clunky punctuation to a more feminine fabric or silhouette.
→ Socks and sandals are no longer taboo! Pick up your jaw, have a little moment, come back. This is not a drill. Try it, it’s good.
