Red, white and blue is one of my favorite color combinations for some reason…not because I want to be all patriotic or “proud to be an American”, but I just think they look good together. And sometimes it’s fun to just embrace the ridiculousness of wearing red, white and blue, like I’m doing here. I was going for a sort of 50’s Americana/marching band/pinup/tacky 90’s teenager (again, I know!) /military/circus/Rosie the Riveter look. Yes, I know that’s a lot of “influences” to roll into one outfit. I sort of had that Chanel collection with all the stars and stripes in the back of my mind, as well as the spread from the Teen Vogue I just got in the mail that has lots of 40’s/50’s prairie dresses and good old-fashioned American clothing. And The Music Man, of course, which I’ve rambled on about before.
I also wanted to do a sort of Amy-Winehouse-esque hair and makeup thing (minus the crackhead part) because whenever I think of 50’s I think of her (this is how my mind works) and I had some blue liquid eyeliner lying around that I wanted to use to do a winged look like she does. But my semi-beehive hair kept falling down (as you can see), I couldn’t figure out how to tie my headscarf just right, and as it turns out, it’s really hard to wear blue eyeliner and red lipstick without looking like a tranny clown. Especially if you’re like me and you don’t know how to put on makeup.
One final note: after looking at these pictures, I realized this outfit would have been infinitely better with some sort of white lace bustier/corset top instead of my ratty old falling-apart-Erin-Wasson-esque tank top that used to be a T-shirt but then I cut the neckline a little too low by mistake and now I have to keep pulling it up and it’s really awkward…
…I write too much.
