queenelizabeth 's Thoughts:

Red, white and blue is one of my favorite color combinations for some reason…not because I want to be all patriotic or “proud to be an American”, but I just think they look good together. And sometimes it’s fun to just embrace the ridiculousness of wearing red, white and blue, like I’m doing here. I was going for a sort of 50’s Americana/marching band/pinup/tacky 90’s teenager (again, I know!) /military/circus/Rosie the Riveter look. Yes, I know that’s a lot of “influences” to roll into one outfit. I sort of had that Chanel collection with all the stars and stripes in the back of my mind, as well as the spread from the Teen Vogue I just got in the mail that has lots of 40’s/50’s prairie dresses and good old-fashioned American clothing. And The Music Man, of course, which I’ve rambled on about before.

I also wanted to do a sort of Amy-Winehouse-esque hair and makeup thing (minus the crackhead part) because whenever I think of 50’s I think of her (this is how my mind works) and I had some blue liquid eyeliner lying around that I wanted to use to do a winged look like she does. But my semi-beehive hair kept falling down (as you can see), I couldn’t figure out how to tie my headscarf just right, and as it turns out, it’s really hard to wear blue eyeliner and red lipstick without looking like a tranny clown. Especially if you’re like me and you don’t know how to put on makeup.

One final note: after looking at these pictures, I realized this outfit would have been infinitely better with some sort of white lace bustier/corset top instead of my ratty old falling-apart-Erin-Wasson-esque tank top that used to be a T-shirt but then I cut the neckline a little too low by mistake and now I have to keep pulling it up and it’s really awkward…

…I write too much.

Agreed on the white corset. Its such an inspiring combination of white lace with the red blazer and denim shorts. I want mom shorts! My mom doesn't own any, but I guess that's a good thing for her :p

hahaha good for your mom :) mine are actually just mom jeans that I made into shorts, i bet you could find them at thrift stores since not many people would buy them! :)

I've been looking for a colored blazer for ages, and your is just perfect! Yeah I think a bustier would totally make the outfit, but this one still looks amazing nonetheless. You've got a real knack for combining unlikely pieces and make them work! Nice job, per usual :)

Thanks so much! As for blazers, you could always look at thrift stores (this is my suggestion for everything - go thrifting!) - the one near me is organized by color with blazers in every shade of the rainbow. it's amazing! :)

no no, you don't write too much! i enjoyed reading your entry because sometimes i feel the same way, like is it possible to be having so many ideas running around to make one outfit? but it's true!!! and you pulled this off so well. though now that you mention it, a bustier top would be so cool. i've been considering getting one, too! oh, and now i've written too much!!! haha! :)
