For those of us who know even the slightest about punk subculture, there seems to be something very wrong with last Monday’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Benefit, whose theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” The street movement that started in the ‘70s with its anarchic energy, working-class roots, and hard-core sound is the exact opposite of the red carpet and the glitz and glamour associated with it. That being said, let’s take a deep breath and try not to see the irony in celebrities dressed as punks; because really, almost everyone in attendance looked amazing, and we can’t stop staring. Here are my fave interpretations of punk for the night.
Emma Watson (in Prabal Gurung), Carey Mulligan (in Balenciaga) and Miranda Kerr (in Michael Kors) opted for all-black cut-out gowns. In another setting, these may all seem over-the-top for these gals, but here they were modest.
Animalistic, party-hungry looks ruled the red carpet. Miley Cyrus rocked a spiked Billy Idol coiffure and a mesh Marc Jacobs dress; Cara Delevingne donned a low-cut spike-doused Burberry dress, and even lovely miss Anne Hathaway got wild in a vintage Valentino dress that- no matter how hard she tried- still looked classy.
Shiny Metal Punk
Elizabeth Banks was all business in her gold Atelier Versace blazer/mini dress with black fringed heels that complemented the look perfectly, and Katy Perry looked oh-so-divine in a metallic Dolce & Gabbana dress with matching crown.
Punks at Heart
Gwen Stefani and Rooney Mara are two celebrities that could tell us they’re punks in real life and might actually convince us; until they go back to their mansions, drape themselves in velvet and sip on the finest champagne, that is. Gwen proved that you can have killer abs at any age in a midriff-baring Maison Martin Margiela black and white dress, and Rooney Mara somehow looked punk all dressed in white Givenchy (love the zipper detailing!).
And it’s safe to say, punk or not: ear cuffs are a must in my wardrobe now.
