This past weekend I went on a shopping trip with my boyfriend’s mom and grandma to the Livermore Premium Outlets. Kind of inspired by Iris and Daniel’s How to Stay Stylish on a College Budget post, I mostly went browsing at the Saks Off 5th, J.Crew and Barneys New York outlet stores with budgeting on the brain. I ended up getting some really awesome designer stuff from Barneys— a pair of Theyskens’ Theory bell bottom silk jeans and a gray Barneys silk blouse.
The total came out to about $170, which is usually high for me on just two items but I still saved at least $300 compared to the retail price.
Here’s a breakdown of my shopping budget per month:
- $100 at Chictopia Shop
- $0-300 online, at thrift stores, or other brick & mortar stores
I mix up my shopping with high and low, usually lots of thrifted items and online shopping (there’s usually a discount coupon posted online so it’s worth it to Google for one before hitting the check out button) making up the majority of my outfits. I also have a big girl job and am pretty good at saving, so I don’t lose any sleep over splurging once every other month.
I didn’t realize that a lot of people have trouble justifying splurges until I came across this forum post. It seems like a lot of us have trouble justifying expensive clothes, but personally I keep designer pieces for a long time, so in the end it’s worth the price tag (and it’s more of a save than a splurge). A $100 T by Alexander Wang maxi dress— expensive but still an essential in my closet. A $350 Harputs dress— major splurge but it keeps the SF fashion lover in me happy.
How much do you normally spend on clothes? Do you have trouble justifying expensive designer clothes or is it pretty simple for you? Would love to hear about your shopping budget in the comments!
