It was a pink overall dress with a floral embroidery across the top. As a four-year-old who refused to wear pants, I had a lot of dresses in good old 1989, but it was this one, the pink one with the clasps, that I loved so much. I wore it through age five and held on as long as I could through kindergarten, until I grew out of it. My mom had a vague understanding of sewing so I insisted she sew me one just like it, to which she said said in Arabic, “inshallah habibti” (God willing, my dear). It lived in the crevices of a closet until it was eventually donated, I’m sure.
While it’s hard to say everyone has a first fashion memory, I think a lot of people, like me, have a first memory of a clothes encounter that they can still remember today. It was that first favorite, the first time you ever became attached to a piece of clothing, pair of shoes, or (probably) plastic purse. In some cases, perhaps it even started the beginning of a great relationship with style.
In attempt to get up close and personal with other fashion aficionados and learn how others first became attracted to clothes, I sent a few notes to some of my favorite Chictopia Style Icons begging the question, “What’s your first fashion memory?” They all came back with sweet, touching stories of their own that I am so excited to share with you.
Annika Victoria: “My first fashion memory is when I was three or four years old and I first managed to dress myself properly. I remember waking up one morning and deciding that I was going to dress myself, and, like a true 90s kid, donned a pair of floral leggings (I remember putting them on the right away around – tag at the back – and being really proud of myself for doing that) and a cropped t-shirt with smiley-face flowers on it. I kept that t-shirt until I was about 10, I loved it so much. And now that I think about it, it’s actually an outfit I would probably still wear today. I remember being so proud of myself that I ran to my parents room and woke my mum up – it was very early in the morning, haha – to show her how I’d dressed myself.”
DevoreLeBeauMonstre: “My first fashion memory: A pair of red cowboy boots with glitter accents when I was 6. I remember walking through the store with my mom and just stopping and staring in amazement. Thankfully, the look of joy on my face was enough to persuade my mom to buy them for me & I wore them everywhere until my feet grew out of them (which was a very traumatic moment).”
KathleenCarla: “When I was in middle school, I remember the most popular backpack to wear were Jansports. Looking back on it, all throughout middle school I kept my light purple Jansport backpack – I thought the color was girly yet unique. I kept it mostly for sentimental value, all my friends wrote funny or heartfelt messages on it with pastel/metallic gel pens (when those were in too) and I think it even had Lisa frank stickers were stuck on on it. Key chains were used to accessorize the front. Come to think of it, no wonder my love for bags and accessories continues up to this day.”
CaraJ: “My first fashion memory is when my parents returned from their trip to Brazil when I was 5 or 6 and my Mom handed me the most beautiful pair of golden ballet flats…I loved them so much, it was definitely the beginning of my shoe, and fashion, obsession.”
TheVagabond: “My first fashion memory was of my mother dressing me up in frilly dresses with matching frilly socks and Mary Janes, which led to outfits of matching tops and bottoms. I guess I was rocking the suit trend even then!”
