There is something to be said about all of the culturally rich, historically significant items that you can find in Washington, D.C. I met the very inspiring woman behind Bahari Creations who uses kanga cloth, an artifact of Swahili culture since the mid 19th century, to create these beautifully versatile and impactful tote bags. The history of the kanga is still evolving, with the addition of Swahili sayings to some of the printed kerchief textiles early this century. In Tanzania, kangas are made to commemorate social or political events. Perhaps Washington, D.C., as the political capital of the U.S., is the obvious next place to use them? Only time will tell ;).
