For those of us on the east coast, it looks like spring may never come, but if it does, we have plenty of fun and exciting trends to look forward to. From bermuda shorts to mod dresses, the trends this spring far exceed the usual pretty pastels and floral prints. And luckily for us thrifters, almost all of them can easily be found at your local thrift shop.
Ruffles Here and There
Whether it’s a Victorian-inspired ruffled top as seen on the S/S 2013 Givenchy runway, a Chloé-inspired laid-back ruffle dress or a Spanish-inspired ruffle skirt like Balenciaga’s, ruffles are everywhere and on everything. Pair them with minimalist pieces for a perfectly breezy casual look.
Bermuda Shorts and Capris
A welcomed trend for the season, the go-to laid-back garment: Bermuda shorts. Take a cue from the Spring/Summer runways of Ruffian, DKNY, Peter Som and Rag & Bone and wear your knee-length shorts at the hip. A more curve-hugging option was seen on the Rachel Zoe and Vera Wang runway, that looks great in a high-rise fit.
Everyone from Chris Benz to Carolina Herrera used the hue that transitions swimmingly from winter to spring: mint green. Donna Karan paired mint green blazers with flowy skirts. Catharine Malandrino went sporty and tomboy with the hue. No matter how you choose to wear it, just do it already!
Last spring flirted with this trend, but 2013 spring is fully committed to it. This year, do it with bold stripes, emerald green, crop tops and wide-legged pants. The only strict rule when wearing a suit this spring: keep it tailored. And if you’re thrifting it, you most likely, literally, need to get it tailored.
Stripes (really) Big and (really) Small
Bold as bold can get, huge stripes were plastered all over the S/S ’13 runway. Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta all got the memo. If you’re not feeling like blasting everyone out-the-frame with the size of your stripes though, not to worry; micro stripes are just as hot this season. Wear them proud.
They rule. They’re comfortable. They make everyone look infinitely cool. Pair them with trends like Bermuda shorts and bold striped voluminous skirts. You need one- or five- in your closet. right. now.
Thank you Louis Vuitton for allowing this to be a staple of every fashion bloggers wardrobe this spring. Thank. You. We’re all looking 60’s-cool in this, and it works for everyone. And if you don’t readily have a checked-print shift dress in your closet, thrift a plain dress and DIY the print like I did. When you need a trend, you need it now. Right, ladies?!
Layer up this spring in hues from khaki to a rainbow of pastels, and do it sharp folds, skirts-over-pants and kimonos a la Christopher Kane, Etro and Chris Benz.
Black & White on Black & White
Black and white all over is hot for spring, but let’s start a trend just for thrift lovers: I see black and white fish bone print often in thrift stores. See it? Grab it. And let’s make this a trend this spring just for the thrifty at heart.
