You may have heard “Yoko, Oh No” said a few times, with her Katy Perry cover and collection with Opening Ceremony. Yoko Ono is loco, but when it comes to her style it’s classic with an unexpected, very “Yoko” twist.
Who mastered the all black and all white look? YOKO. Who wore knee high socks to her wedding? YOKO. And let’s not forget that she’s almost turning 80 and still looks young and beautiful in hot pants. That takes a lot of guts and fashion sense.
Here are some dressing tips you can learn from Yoko.
1. Hats are in. Not a hat person? Become a hat person. It could change your outfit completely.
2. Being body conscious doesn’t mean wearing body-con dresses. Work your hottest accessory — whether it’s your legs, boobs, collarbone, or abs — and leave everything else to the imagination.
3. Go for the unexpected. While every girl is throwing on a sparkly, glitter New Years Eve dress from Forever 21 and a pair of strappy Michael Kors heels, you want to wear at least one piece that hasn’t been done. Is there a cool leather detail on your skirt? A weird belt in your closet? A new, drapey shape to your dress? Wear that instead.
4. Bright ain’t that right. You know how everyone loved to colorblock with their American Apparel maxi skirts since 2011? And wear neon? Do both less. Yoko’s all black and all white minimalism never went out of style and it’s retained its authenticity in fashion since the 70s.
And number 5…
Less is more. There are people who try hard and go overboard with arm candy and spikes and baroque and galaxy print. Let your style speak for itself. Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
