One of fashion’s most sought after it girls isn’t an editor, model or blogger. She’s a TV personality (okay, and one-time model) we all know and love named Alexa Chung. Coming in maybe only after Miroslava Duma and Taylor Tomasi-Hill as most popular style icon, the unassuming fashion maven told Refinery29 that she’s just a typical, cookie-cuter hipster and even said that the “style icon” label might be a little premature. Wow – modesty much, Alexa? And I’m not even being sarcastic.
However you want to spin it, and while we can appreciate Alexa’s self-awareness, there is something to be said of her style in that between the it girls and style icons of today, her look and attitude is decidedly unique. As Corin Nelson, an executive producer and show runner for “It’s On With Alexa Chung” told the New York Times, “She very much marches to the beat of her own fashion drum.”
Izzy Grinspan, editor of Racked NY, seemed to agree. “You can very easily dress like Alexa Chung and it feels really fresh and new right now because it’s such a change,” she also told the New York Times.
I’ll admit that it took me some time to warm up to Alexa, just because her own comment about herself is true, in my opinion. But at the same time, I like that she doesn’t make a big deal of herself and neither does her style – the term “effortless” comes to mind. In this way, the comparisons to Kate Moss’ style in her heyday are totally called for.
Alexa’s style is edgy but not in a domineering way, feminine but in a 12-year-old girl kind of way, and it overall displays a sort of playfulness that is casual and chic at the same time. It’s not surprising that so many people want to get the look then – because looking put together but effortless and still mostly comfortable is not a combination to create easily.
Her look, when broken down, is actually pretty simple.
Tops are where Alexa simplifies. Since her statement-makers are usually her bottoms, tops are kept plain and often layered up. She even sometimes places her button-ups under dresses for formal events. Pieces to look out for:
- Peter Pan collar top
- Chunky sweater
- Collared button-up
- Graphic tee
Though she experiments in a variety of dress shapes, Alexa usually sticks to shapeless numbers like babydolls and shift dresses. She seems to prefer them with some sort of sleeve, sometimes even long sleeved.
- Babydoll dress
- Long sleeve dress
- Shift dress
- Exaggerated shoulder dress
Bottoms are usually where Alexa wears her prints, if any. Besides good ol’ skinny jeans, she gravitates to shorts and seemingly two skirt styles.
- Distressed high waist denim shorts
- Black high waist denim shorts
- Full skirts
- Short 60s style mini-skirts
Alexa has, in my opinion, made the chunky kitten heel her own item, and I love it. Often pair it with dresses for formal events, this might be the iconic Alexa look. Her other shoe loves include:
- Feminine flats
- Kitten heels
- Chunky kitten heels
Her purse choices do not waver much – Alexa can often be seen in a coveted quilted Chanel bag and a few others:
- Quilted Chanel bag
- Short handle leather bags
- Embellished clutches
