Leila Shams presented her sweet but naughty Spring/Summer 2013 ready-to-wear collection at Pier 59 Studios during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and it was just as outrageously “Leila” as one would hope it’d be. With pop tunes mixed by DJ Mick Boogie and model Jessica White stomping down the runway in a green brocade dress, the opening immediately showed Shams’ personality— romantic, fun, sexy, and daring.
Stylist David Yi did a fantastic job putting together Leila’s looks. The entire collection was like a flow of soft hair, lace, and sugar coated dresses with an occasional edgier street style look. White denim tie-dyed in bright purple and leather jackets made everyone recognize the designer’s Brooklyn roots.
Most impressive from Leila’s collection: Remember those embroidered patches that you ironed onto your mini backpacks in the 90’s? Well, Leila somehow made those cool again by putting frayed embroideries on skirts and the back of jackets with the words “God bless this ho & all who enter it” stitched on juxtaposed with a frame of flowers. Because, of course, such naughty words need to be wrapped around by pretty flowers!
Other trends that were spotted:
→ A candy colored palette filled with seafoam green, lilac, bright purple, magenta, ivory, and white.
→ Cream colored socks with heels for that quirky, young look.
→ Harnesses that kind of look like suspenders, belts, and ribcages! Similar to Hervé Léger Fall/Winter 2012, the line which started it all, the bondage look seems to stick around for a couple more seasons.
→ Feminine peplum skirt silhouettes on tops that aren’t too strong.
→ Romantic lace, braids and brocade.
→ Tough warrior princess Xena-esque gold bracelet cuffs.
→ A sexy underwear-baring sheer dresse.
We got to have a quick chat with Leila on her collection. Did you know she was going for the 70’s porn look?
Finish this sentence: Your Spring/Summer 2013 collection is…
While designing the spring collection, who was the girl you saw wearing it?
“Me! I’ve been filming a reality show all summer and I’m not allowed to repeat outfits so I’m completely out of things to wear. I’m so excited to have all new clothes now! I wore the sheer lavender dress with a harness to the after party.”
What was your favorite part of putting the presentation together?
“David Yi styled the show, and usually I can be kind of a dick about styling, but he was great. The socks were his idea – we were going for a 70s porn look and they worked out perfectly.”
How do you think you’ve grown as a designer since your last collection?
“I was really lonely and depressed when I designed last season. Now everything is going well – I have an amazing job designing sportswear for Buffalo Jeans, I just moved into my dream apartment with my boyfriend, and I’ve got an incredible group of supportive friends who help me with everything.”
I know you’ve done reality show appearances. Do you have any more exciting projects you’re working on now?
“I’m currently filming a show with four friends called Girlfriend Confidential NY. Leigh Rossini, who represents Louis Licari, did the gorgeous hair and makeup for my last two shows. Kelly Brady of Brandsway Creative represents Jessica White, who opened and closed the show this season. All of the girls helped out in some way or another – they’re great friends and we’ve gotten even closer filming the show. I’m excited for people to see a group of successful, funny women who actually love each other.”
Leila’s definitely got the aesthetic down and what it takes to make it big in this industry. We can’t wait to see more from this budding designer! God bless this ho.
