Oh, I've had long hair up until last year! I got bored of it and chopped it all off. I'm planning on playing around with this length until I get sick of this too!

I love studded black things and I also adore boho scarfs. It's because my character isn't only about being "rockstar". I combine many different character traits. I can be sweet, mean, funny, etc etc and I want to dress variably!

I'm just assuming people have a lot of negative connotations with the word "uniform." I thought your initial post was analagous to how an artist has a distinct style, but can choose to manifest his/her work in carefully designated forms (or totally varied forms). If you're a good artist, people will be able to recognize your work from miles away, among a sea of similar works. BTW I like your pants

i don't have anything against contraversial/argumentative fashion. it really makes us stop and think about *why* we love a certain trends. i do emulate a number of looks but they always are distinctly me. i'm more of an exotic/vintage/bohemian girl, but sometimes, i'll do the minimalistic look my way. i'll wear teh black drop crotch pants with the blazer, but instead of leaving it at that, i'll pu

put on some gladiators or funky shoes, and accessorize with a gold belt and jewelry. you can be versitile and yet stick to your true style. whether it's vintage, bohemian, mod, exotic or urban, i think every outfit i wear has a part of me in it, no matter the overall assumed style. i think we shouldn't be afraid to embrace trends, so long as we truly like them. as a chictopian, you possess the cre

you do look adorable in any case. its true, all the wandering and wondering about ones own style certainly should have a purpose. i think there is consistency to be found in anyone's style however ecclectic she/he claims it to be. i, for my part am too stuck in firm patterns and thats what annoys me. so i personally want to get out of my uniform more.

There is nothing wrong with controversy! If anything, it only challenges us to think harder about the reasons behind our beliefs. Or in this case, verbalize it with more clarity :-)

perceived from previous posts is more structured, a little stiff but with a funky piece in the middle. Here you were still structured especially with the ruffles on the shirt but I do feel as if this outfit came out the blue. It seems to laid back. thats all for today, i do happen to love the change up! and the hair looks amazing!

I do sort of understand where your coming from. Your style should have a cohesive messagebut personally I tend to switch up some days but still keep my obsession of wearing denim. its a apart of my style and I ca always leave it but in general if I had nothign to wear the denim jeans would be my first choice. I feel as if your correct but than your contridicting yourself. Your aura which I have ..

the anti-uniform
Feb 04, 2009

Wow. I didn’t realize that this post would get so much feedback! Thanks for all of the quality of your comments and thoughts. Just a few bits of clarification from my end since I feel like I might have come across as brasher than I intended:

I’m mortified that I might have come across as saying that dressing trendy or having multiferious tastes is something negative. Dude, I wear pants all the time. I’ll rock a super-femme vintage dress. I’ll even show up to your house in stilettos if that’s what my mood’s calling for. Being creative and experimental with your clothing is paramount to any person’s fashion odyssey and falling in love with new shapes and aesthetics and new designers and looks is argueably the most entertaining part of fashion. But I think that experimentation and creativity should have a purpose. What’s at the root of all of this is that your clothing you choose to wear yourself should send a message that’s consistent what what you’re trying to say about yourself. Now, if what you value is novelty, then wearing trendy and contemporary clothing is exactly what you should do. And if your mood oscillates, then by all means, dress up and down and left and right. That’s your uniform!

While I know that people’ personalities are multifaceted and change from day to day, I haven’t met many people who are at once both intrinsically ostentatious and shy, or minimalist and opulent, or super girly cute and also hard and jaded. And so for me, when I see someone who will dress in head to toe black studded leather one day and then in a peasant skirt and a boho scarf the next, it’s hard for me to gauge what kind of person they are. And this probably says more about myself than anything, but it’s that uncertainty that’s the reason why I get uneasy.

But TBH, those kinds of people are few and far between (I’m thinking Lindsay Lohan in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen). And even though I’m not delicate or twee or fussy myself, I get along really well with delicate and twee and fussy people as well as tall and introverted and mean people and short and extroverted and nice people. And bonus points if you’re into fashion :)

And if you disagree, please comment! I can’t pretend that what I’m saying isn’t going to offend some, or elicit some strong reactions, but fashion is supposed to be contentious! I’m all about discussing fashion in deeper terms and talking about what it means to you. From the supportive to the skeptical, Chictopia depends on your opinions and thoughts to make this whole thing worthwhile.

This kind of sounds like a PSA. Sorrryy. But check it: my hair is unstraightened, my shirt is frilly, and I’ve got PANTS on (that are DENIM for chrissakes). So even though this is totally not what I usually wear—an anti-uniform perhaps?—I still feel comfortable and myself in it, you know?
