In the long, hot summer months, style can get a bit boring when you constantly grab for that floral dress or those denim cut-offs. Luckily, nautical fashion still says summer but with an easy-going, fresh sophistication. The look is easy to pull off with some crisp stripes, bright reds, navy blues and a couple of anchors, but why not take the look to the next level with some rope accessories?
Today I’m going to show you how I learned to tie complex decorative knots and make them into amazing knot-ical accessories.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- rope
- chain
- necklace clasp and jump ring
- scissors
- pliers
- glue gun (not pictured)
TUTORIAL:
[ ATTACH CLASP ] – Take your length of chain and attach the clasp to the end so that you have a method of closure. I used a jump ring and pliers to attach the clasp.
[ TIE ON ROPE ] – Use two short lengths of your rope and tie them in simple knots onto your chain. These will be perfect for attaching to your decorative knot.
[ TIE KNOT ] – I decided to learn how to make decorative knots by following a tutorial on a website called Animated Knots. There are step by step instructions and photos that make complex knots as easy as going over and under. I chose to make an “Ocean Plait Mat” and you can find the full instructional for that knot here. It takes a bit of patience and practice at first but the results are amazing and so rewarding.
[ GLUE TOGETHER ] – Take your glue gun and secure the ends of the rope so that it’s all tucked neatly under the knot. Then glue the ends of the rope that is tied to the chain onto your giant knot! You’re all done and ready to rock a nautical look!
