Like spices to a fine dish, accessories can change an outfit completely. The tone of a look changes from slick and minimal to glamorous grandeur from the switch of a necklace. Flavors intensified or pared down. The jewelry, bags, and play up the personality and fashion a whole new look. For Fall 2012, that look is daring and bold. This upcoming season, the building blocks of fashion have been carved into new shapes, painted with brighter colors, and embellished with the finest jewels. These are the standout must-have accessories for Fall.
The Clown Shoe
Fashion is all about contradictions. Can we even count how many times we’ve heard high-low, hard-soft, edgy-romantic, or pretty-ugly just in the last ten minutes? The last in that sequence of fashion buzz words is what Fall 2012 is focusing in on, of course led by the maestro of pretty-ugly, Miuccia Prada. The must have shoe for the adventurously awkward next season is the bulbous, misshapen clown foot silhouette. Models were seen clomping down the runway in these clunky brogues and heels at influential shows like Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garçons, Marni, and Miu Miu.
→ Worn best with printed trousers or geeky socks, this new shoe shape is for the fashion risk taker. The flat platform wedge is back to school friendly.
The Sci-Fi Shoe
If you’re more strut than stomp, the sci-fi shoe may rev your engines. The other it-shoe of the season slenderizes the heel, points the toe, and cuts strategically for a sleeker, more futuristic approach on footwear. Our favorite rendition was at Jil Sander for Raf Simons’ final collection at the house. Using a patchwork of different materials from holographic reflective pinks to classic patent blush, the techno layers of shine and overlapping lines added life to a more ladylike shoe shape. Chanel also did blocked metallics in with an asymmetrical exposed side; half Mary Jane, half boot. The boots were completed with kryptonite-esque gem Perspex heels. Talk about blinding me with science.
→ More delicate than the clown shoe, the trend for minimal, voluminous fashion works well with this sharp sole. Look for shine, cutouts, and peep toes.
The Bright Bag
If street style is the new runway, then this trend is the one hanging out with every fashion-phile on the sidewalk. The statement bag is no new idea, Spring and Summer showed off a new obsession with the brighter the better. Just don’t put those warm-weather colors away just because the temperature is dropping. The bright colored bag was not a frequent runway exit, but walk into any department store and see the handbag section engulfed by candy apple reds, pumpkin oranges, bold chartreuse and process magenta. These loud colored bags are not for the faint of heart, tiny bag lovers beware. The hues are coming in the form of minimal and sleek gigantic totes, oversized clutches, and trusty messengers.
→ Save your summer sacks and satchels, their bright colors will stand out against Fall jackets and Winter coats. Pop a complimentary color underneath.
The Party Jewels
It’s probably apparent already, what with the statement shoes and bright colors, but Fall 2012 feels much more extravagant and celebratory than past seasons. If there’s anyone in fashion who knows how to have fun, it’s Alber Elbaz. For Lanvin, it was the ultimate in glamour, glitz, and a gathering of fashion’s finest in honoring Elbaz’s ten years at the house. The silhouettes were expressive and voluminous, the jewels matched that in excess. This Autumn, it’s go big or go home with gigantic baubles, opulent chokers, sparkling brooches, jeweled cuffs; it’s time to pile it all on!
→ The dichotomy of garish and glamorous helps us keep our money in our brightly colored totes; go for costume jewelry! Bigger and better without forking over for actual diamonds.
Fall 2012’s Must Have Accessories
Obviously narrowed down to the most newsworthy, these pieces are only the beginning of all the amazing accessories hitting stores right now. If you learn anything from clown shoes and costume jewelry, make sure it’s to have fun with fashion this Fall. Even in confusion and flux, the industry is ready to celebrate because change is what fashion does best. The experimental and exuberant nature of these accessories is a fantasy, and we’re ready to start exploring.
