So this is possibly the only new dress I’ve bought in the last year. I’ve gotta say that it was nice to change it up a little from the vintage/ thrifting scene.
There’s something gratifying about walking into a shiny store and buying something with tags on it. Less gratifying is when it’s a week later and your at an ATM wondering where that money disappeared to…
At the time though, I was a long way from Brooklyn killing time in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. When I’d left my apartment that morning, I’d forgotten that I was going to a family thing that night. (My genius sister in law – with a great sense of style – graduated first in her class at Cornell’s med school. Not too shabby…)
It goes without saying that I wasn’t dressed in a way that said ‘fancy dinner.’
Most problematic: a green infinity sign on my shoulder and a brown mandala-esque thing on my back. It’s totally absurd at this point, but I go to extreme lengths to hide my tattoos from my parents. I’ve had them both for about 8 years, give or take, and am pathological about covering them up. The doomed charade gets the most preposterous come summer. It’s surprisingly difficult to find stuff with sleeves and full backs when it gets hot.
Anyways, I ended up wearing this caftan/ mini dress out of Big Drop (a very lovely store with a spattering of Manhattan locations). I definitely did my so-called budget a disservice, but I can’t say I’ve had any buyer’s remorse. It’s one of those things that you can wear in 99.9% humidity and not feel like you’re wading through a swamp. That’s my idea of a good investment.
And I like the colors…
