I was making Polyvores with my friend Fiona the other day and she was flipping through my outfits and was all “CONNIE. Neutral jacket + colored dresses + sculptural shoes. YAWN”. But you know what? YEEYUH. If I had to dress myself in a uniform every single day, it’d be a neutral jacket + a colored dress + sculptural shoes. It’s simple, it’s classic, it’s (IMO) strong and pretty, and even if it gets predictable, it’s my very own. The concept of a uniform is something I’m really into right now. Alexander Wang lives in his lightweight t-shirts and sneakers, Rick Owens doesn’t deviate from his sweatpants and cashmere tanks, Carolina Herrera’s got her crisp white shirts, and I’ve got my floral dresses and blazers.
Actually?
This makes me a bit of an asshole, but I kind of don’t trust people who don’t have a consistent sense of style. Hear me out, the way you dress speaks volumes about the person you are. Even for those people that couldn’t care less about what they put on, their clothing usually says something about them. For me, I hate looking dainty, I hate looking twee and I hate looking fussy—and you know what? Those are things that I’d hate to be myself. So for those who dress according to the fashion flavor of the week, it does say something about their chameleon-like personality.
I’m not saying that cultivating a sense of personal style is easy. It’s one of the most difficult things to do because it involves quite a bit of introspective thinking. What kind of person are you? what kind of person do you want to be? What kind of person do you want the world to see you as? But I think those are important questions to ask yourself anyways, and even more important if you do care about fashion.
Sorry to get so thinky on you. But seriously, make a post describing your personal style and link it in the comments below! I’m really interested in seeing what you guys have to say!
