We all know the awards night drill – everyone gathers around the TV, many of us more intrigued by what our favorite stars will be wearing rather than who is taking home the big prize. And we’re not alone! When you look at young Hollywood, new stars can make or break their own careers based upon how they dress…just look at the success of Rooney Mara and Jennifer Lawrence, for example. But the fact of the matter is, their personal stylists play a much larger role in their appearances than their own personal aesthetics. At the end of the day, a good stylist can help a celebrity take home the real prize – style icon status – or completely miss the mark. If you haven’t been following the ladies who lead your favorite actresses, now’s your chance to get acquainted with a few of them.
1. Elizabeth Stewart. If there is one celebrity stylist you should know, Elizabeth Stewart would be that stylist. If you ever wondered how newcomer actress Jennifer Lawrence of the Hunger Games stunned on the red carpet time and time again, look no further than Stewart. The stylist A-lister is also responsible for saving Michelle Williams after she bombed in a daisy-clad gown by Valentino during the 2011 Golden Globes (the solution was, of course, Chanel at the Oscars). Prior to working as a stylist, Stewart worked in the style department of the New York Times Magazine for a whooping ten years, and before that she was the Paris Editor of W and WWD. Other clients include Amanda Seyfried, Kristin Davis, Cate Blanchett, Frieda Pinto, Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, and sometimes January Jones. Wow. Talk about a power player.
2. Jeanne Yang. The personal stylist of Katie Holmes is also her co-designer – the two have a high-end brand called Holmes & Yang that retails at Barney’s and Barney’s-like prices. When I had the pleasure of meeting Yang a few months ago, I was also pleased to find that she’s quite the advocate of being ecologically responsible when it comes to dressing – buy used! Originally educated in law, the stylist is intelligent, independent, and a family woman. Yang also outfits Tom Cruise, Melissa Leo, and Christian Bale.
3. Petra Flannery. Wowed by Emma Stone’s style? Join the club. In Hollywood, you’re only as good as your stylist, and clearly Emma’s found the right one for her – this is as good as it gets! Equally enthralled with Mila Kunis? Flannery counts her as well as Zoe Saldana as clients, and if you notice a pattern here, it is one that embodies the concept of chic. In the Hollywood Reporter’s list of 25 Most Powerful Stylists in Hollywood, Flannery came in at number three, just after Rachel Zoe and Kate Young. Other clients include Claire Danes and Faith Hill, and to add to all of this, she has a number of magazine spreads and covers under her belt.
4. Monica Rose. There’s no way I could forget the stylists who outfits the Kardashians! The Kardashian Klan depend on Hollywood stylist Monica Rose to keep them outfitted – and that’s a lot of bodies and a lot of outfits! Love them or hate them, the power family manages to stay one step ahead of the game by dressing the part, whatever that part may be.
