British style is eclectic, a mix of tradition and defiance, inspired as much from high end designers to punky street kids. Making it great inspiration for dressing for school!
It’s a juxtaposition of tradition and conservatism with edgy, sometimes brash and uniquely English flair.
Inspired by Paul by Paul Smith’s A/W 08 collection I recreated this outfit for class from one of my favorite looks. The leather moto jacket and ruffled sleeves of the white button up are great little details to add a little panache to an otherwise very collegiate, preppy look. Yet, still is subdued enough to look professional and can take you from class to visiting a professor’s office hours to a campus job interview.
The collection consists of quintessential English staples such as boxy jackets, fitted knits and pleated skirts, but worn together with that quirky British sensibility. Drawing inspiration from the English Mod and rock ‘n’ roll era, the collection really motivates me to dress up for school more. When you wanna look cute and preppy but not too preppy. Like those dudes you see wearing two Lacoste polos at the same time with the collars popped. WTF? Instead channel some Chuck Bass ;)
What you need for the look:
-an array of smart basics (e.g. white button up blouses, cardigans, fitted blazers etc.)
-plaid/tartan
-pops of color
-eclectic/whimsical accessories
-pictures of Chuck for inspiration
That’s it! Easy schmeasy.
At left: looks from the Paul by Paul Smith collection. Does anyone else feel the need for some more ORANGE and Chuck in their life?
