None of us can deny the importance of our mothers. That would just be ridiculous. We even had a national holiday honoring them yesterday. They gave birth to us at the very least; quite often they do much more than that. If we’re lucky, our moms saved some of the clothes from their crazy teenage years; my mom has whipped out her fair share of jumpsuits, crop tops and wacky pantsuits (maybe even a tad more than her fair share). Sometimes we can even snag some earlier 1900s garments from the thirties, forties and fifties via our grandmothers. Thanks, grandma! I can’t speak for everyone, but my mom’s style in her younger days has had a huge influence on my personal style today. There are plenty of celebrities that have made a massive impact on their children’s lives by getting them involved in fashion, or just by being a part of that culture. Here are a few of my favorite mother-child fashion duos around today.
Isabella Rossellini and her daughter Elettra Weidemann
Elettra Weidemann Rossellini is one of those insanely lucky ducks whose mother was a supermodel (Isabella Rossellini) and whose grandmother was a famous actress (Ingrid Bergman). It’s almost inevitable that with maternal figures like them in one’s life one will become comparably influential in fashion and pop culture. Isabella Rossellini was at her peak during a time of classical beauty; black is a timeless and equally classic color. It comes as no surprise to me that both women, mother and daughter, chose simple black garments for certain special events. Screw the LBD, Isabella is bringing back the MBD (maxi black dress) in a Michael Kors—don’t quote me on that, though—gown, while Elettra keeps it really classy in an Yves Saint Laurent jumpsuit from the Fall/Winter 2011 collection.
Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri
There’s so much buzz going around about the Holmes-Cruise family all the time that there’s no way their little daughter could avoid being the center of attention. It’s not like that wasn’t her goal in the first place; half the time she’s the one starting all of the talk. People were either appalled or inspired by the fact that Suri Cruise wears designer clothing and high heels at age five. I personally think it’s great to develop a personal style so early on in life. Suri gets to skip that awkward pre-teen phase when your clothing choices are worth burning a few years later. This is no judgment on Tom Cruise’s fashion sense, but chances are that Katie Holmes is the one going shopping with Suri, and it definitely shows through. In Derek Blasberg’s Best Dressed List for the week of March 30th, 2012, Katie and Suri were spotted wearing similar floral ensembles. Katie was in a jumpsuit while her daughter wore a dress. The thing that shocked everyone, though, was that Suri was wearing flats.
Madonna and her daughter Lourdes
Madonna has worn some pretty crazy clothing in her lifetime. She has inspired fashion movements (the eighties, anyone?) and served as an iconic figure to many people. Despite her constantly changing fashion obsessions, there’s a reoccurring theme of punk influence. The picture of her above from 1998 is a perfect example of her embracing the grungy style of the decade. The times are different now, and we all know that when one is the daughter of a massive celebrity one will want to blend in as much as possible. If Lourdes Leon walked around looking like her mom in her glory days, her life would be very difficult. You can definitely see the similarities in their styles, however, especially with Lourdes’s shaved hair. It’s so punk. It’s so crazy. It’s so…Madonna.
Angela Missoni and her daughter Margherita
The entire Missoni clan is basically like fashion royalty. Angela Missoni grew up as a daughter of the Missonis (the ones who started it all off), and eventually took her place in the empire. Her daughter Margherita has become a style mogul in her own right, Missoni or not. Granted, most of her clothing is from her family’s company…I can imagine that she’d be just as much of a babe if she wasn’t wearing colorful zigzags and stripes and patterns all the time. Just showin’ some family pride; I dig that. You can see by looking at the picture of Angela and Margherita together that they’re both Missoni girls through and through.
Carine Roitfeld and her daughter Julia
Carine Roitfeld is a greatly revered fashion icon. If she were my mom, I know I wouldn’t be dressing like a shlump, if you know what I’m saying. Julia Restoin Roitfeld has things all figured out in that regard. Peep her gorgeous black dress and scarf that she wore to a party during Paris Fashion Week in 2011—pre-pregnancy, of course, but totally glowing nonetheless. If you look at Carine’s LBD with a sheer overlay, you can tell that both off them have got a thing for simple perfection and beautiful clothing. That’s all you can really ask for in life.
Which mother-daughter pair is your favorite? Are you jealous of Suri Cruise? Do you wish you had those Alaïas on Carine Roitfeld’s feet? Let me know in the comments or shoot us a tweet @everybodyisugly!
