Just when you thought you were safe for a few months…fashion week happens again! The most recent Mercedes-Benz extravaganza occurred in Australia, and wrapped last week. Don’t have time to read all of the reviews? Didn’t even know Australian fashion week existed? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick recap.
FRESH SQUEEZED
Citrus colors for spring were a popular choice among American designers this year, and the trend continued down under.
Dylan Cooper showed bright shades of pink and coral on suits and structured dresses. Also spotted—that trend you’re probably sick of hearing about—the peplum. Emphasizing your hips is hot, hot, hot!
Saturated yellow-green dresses in floaty silhouettes were seen at Miss Unkon and Kirrily Johnson.
Shades of orange, salmon, and lime were also prevalent at Ginger & Smart.
COMIC RELIEF
Graphic patterns and childlike prints brought to mind various iconic images and symbols.
Many bold prints were seen at Roopa Pemmaraju. A particular standout was reminiscent of a Keith Haring painting, with graphic black swirls.
Romance Was Born did a series of pieces printed with comic book heroes. Styled with day-glo hair and exaggerated makeup, the models brought to mind characters themselves, as well as the style of famed designer Jeremy Scott.
Gail Sorronda’s styling was also quite unique and added to the whimsy of the collection.
ANIMAL INSTINCT
From feathers to felines, some designers seemed to pull inspiration straight from the jungle.
A brand famous for their photo printed swimsuits, We Are Handsome’s SS12/13 collection did not disappoint. Fans of the line will want to pick up the lion one-piece—sure to bring out their wild side.
Aurelio Costarella and Akira both showed quite a few feathered items, including shoes and hats.
Finally, Ellery has been the talk of the blogs, with their adorable and definitely DIYable animal-ear caps.
DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: ALICE MCCALL
My personal favorite show was from London-born designer Alice McCall. Her simple dresses stood out to me because of their impeccable construction, delicate embellishment, and attention to detail. The sheer skirt panels and laser cutouts were genius, and so on trend—as well the metallic toe capped heels and (you guessed it!) peplum silhouettes. Braided hair and dewy makeup perfectly completed the chic-milkmaid looks.
