I wore this quite a while ago in mid April but still wanted to share the look here on Chictopia. Its just a simple outfit – blouse and red jeans with a couple of detailed pieces: the gold chain necklace, comfy thick heeled shoes, studded purse, and bunnies on my blouse.
I actually really like this look. I had 2 exams that day but still wanted to look put together lol I’ve said this before but I think that when you take care to pull yourself together you feel better inside too.
Some might say you just don’t have the time to do this and that people who put time and effort into exteriorities are shallow. Things like makeup, styling your hair or following trends is, to some, superfluous. That’s an unfair judgement call. But after all, we are taught that true beauty comes from the inside. Although I couldn’t agree more, through your own style, you can express that amazing person you are inside too. Intelligent, stylish and brimming with confidence. Isn’t that a great message to send to the world?
Why can’t you be beautiful on the inside and still express it visually too? Why is exterior beauty simultaneously revered and reviled? Its desired by all and yet its also thrown aside as unimportant simply because there is this misconception that anyone and everyone who is part of the fashion industry, a fashionista, or stylish in general is also a part of a superfluous, over-consuming, flippant system that has no real value in society or in people’s lives. I have seen, heard or know people who undermine, underestimate, and are condescending to people who enjoy exploring fashion, trends etc.
Its discouraging but then again, I also hear that that’s only a first impression and that when they soon discover who you truly are, they’ll confess that you were just intimidating because of your style or fashion sense. Style (don’t read fashion, fashion is different) can show the world your confidence. Its not a shallow thing, not at all. Its a confidence booster.
If you’re walking down the street and you feel really crappy, but you take a look at your reflection in the store window and you tidied up with a shower, maybe you braided your hair, wore your favourite lipstick, have on your favourite heels, or pulled an outfit together in your fav colours or whatever … you get a boost. You feel better. You can say – I look good. That is self-empowering! That is you reassuring yourself, not relying on someone else to reassure you. That is self-validation, not requiring someone else to do so. And that is what can help you get through the rest of the day.
This helped me deal with exam week stresses. I was tired but I really did feel better when I wore my favourite shoes on me. I was like I love these! I love the way they look on me. I’m so tired from exams but these really perk my mood up. “I can get through this!” And I did – I got through exams with flying colours too. So very happy about the high marks. Now that I’m done my undergrad its off to vacation and then hello grad school in September.
But I shall always do everything in style, whatever other people may say or think. Whether it be undermining or encouraging, for me, style is something you do for yourself. Don’t let anyone bring you down! Whatever you do, do it in style. Do it with courage, conviction, and confidence.
