I spent the weekend on the sunny, windy Canadian prairies. I neve rknow quite what to do during my [infrequent] visits to my birthplace. It has already been six years since I moved away. The airport I first took off from no longer exists – when my flight landed in Winnipeg, I didn’t even recognise where I was! The restaurants I loved have almost all closed. My parents house has been redecorated in a new, modern style – although I did find my old toys inhabiting the closet in my childhood bedroom. I think that as I age, I’m beginning to understand that even though I wish I could have grown up in any other city in the world, I became myself in Winnipeg… And even thought the story of my life there is long over, I will never be able to [and no longer want to] rewrite the chapters that took place there.
