We wanted to learn more about the girls behind the label, so we asked Jade a few questions. Read on to find out more about THE WHITEPEPPER!
Can you tell us about the creators behind THE WHITEPEPPER?
Jade: THE WHITEPEPPER was founded by two girls living in London: Yeon You is the creative director who does photography, styling, makeup, hair, and manages all creative projects. I am the business development manager in charge of all business sides such as marketing and finance. We both work and study at the same time, love to meet people and have fun. We’re people who “work hard and play hard”.
Where are you currently based?
Jade: We’re based in East London where the current trends in fashion are coming from.
Where are you two originally from?
JADE: We’re both originally from South Korea and currently living in London.
What were you doing before THE WHITEPEPPER came about?
Jade: Yeon is still a student at London College of Fashion studying Creative Direction. She loves creative work in fashion and styling. I used to work as a marketing manager in an international recruitment company. I also had a career in fashion business before. Yeon was one of my clients and that’s how we became friends. I fell in love at first sight with Yeon’s photography and styling.
What made you decide to start your own shop?
Jade: We thought it was a good idea to have a place to share our own work and ideas while interacting with people. We came across the idea of opening an online store for it.
Where did the name “THE WHITEPEPPER” come from?
Jade: THE WHITEPEPPER name came from an everyday English word to put out of context of fashion, which makes our name more memorable. The meaning of WHITEPEPPER is adding a little spice to fashion.
How would you describe your label’s style?
Jade: We’re inspired by street style, funny, friendly, quirky, loving, unique and comfortable. We love fashion in daily real life.
Are any of THE WHITEPEPPER clothes and accessories original designs or are they mostly from other distributors?
Jade: That’s quite difficult to answer because it’s part of our business that makes us unique and we spend quite a lot of time to find these young and up-coming designers before they become too established. All collections are from indie designers and vintage pieces. Most of the designers we work with are college students or young fashion designers. For example, we met a talented hat designer from college on a street selling her collection in South Korea when we visited. She’s making all hats by hand at home and buys all materials herself. The designs were so unique and cute so we thought that will fit well with our shop. We also requested her to design a new collection for us. That’s how we find these designers. They are from everywhere around the world.
Can you tell us about what goes on behind the scenes of THE WHITEPEPPER? Who else do you work with that are integral to the your production and photo shoots?
Jade: We are a bunch of friends who love doing fun work together and being creative. At the moment, we work with photographer Wendy Huynh for digital photos, Sarah Louise for film photos. For female Models Ida Walle, Sofia Myrtorp, Sora Kim and Yeon also does modeling sometimes too. For male models, we work with Conor Macklin, Jordan Dean Holland and Gill Yang. I am the person who organizes and schedules all events as well as steaming clothes sometimes. You can see all of us from behind the scene photos on our Facebook page working on recent lookbook project ‘City Break in London.’
Do you have any personal favorite items from THE WHITEPEPPER?
Jade: That’s a really difficult question. Hmm… I love all from the shoe collection, and bags and dresses. Yeon picked the “Angel Dress” and platform wedge boots.
How has your experience been so far selling on Chictopia Shop?
Jade: It has been a great place to meet new friends and share ideas. We also love giving and receiving feedback on Chictopia from and to our fans.
If your store had a playlist, what songs would be playing?
Jade: The Shangri-Las ‘Give Him A Great Big Kiss’ which is the soundtrack for our video ‘Behind the Scenes’ for the lookbook ‘City Break in London.’ You can find the video on YouTube. The video work has been done by moving image designer Markus Lehtonen from the Royal College of Art in London.
What are some of you and Yeon’s favorite spots in London?
Jade: For me I really love Victoria Park, Columbia Flower Market, Broadway Market in East London. You should visit the places if you have a chance to come to London. They’re lovely places! Yeon’s favorite spots are in Hackney Wick which is an area where all different types of creatives have started to move to warehouses.
What do you have planned for the future and once Yeon is done with school?
Jade: We will definitely carry on our work that we’re doing now.
