There is no better time for us, fashion guys, to try something new than in the beginning of a new season. If you are those fashion guys who always think that menswear fashion has no diversity, think again. There are only two reasons why women have more choices. First, they are willing to take a risk. And second, they expand their closet. Apply these two principles to your way of dressing up and you will have more looks to try everyday. Here are five statement pieces that fashion guys should try this spring,
1. Why not you paint your socks bright?
Socks have been hiding inside our pants and shoes for decades, but now as pants’ hems rise, they are exposed for eyes to enjoy. I am not talking about those solid black or navy blue socks, I am talking about those hot pink and yellow-striped socks. And wearing bold-colored socks is a great way to punch up a simple outfit. These yellow naval-stripe socks from J.Crew are great for starter — J.Crew socks and these. Wear them with contrast-colored pants — dark brown or navy blue — and shoes, and all eyes will be on you.
2. Why not you pull-up your pants?
If a girl could invade a man’s closet and wear some of our favorite things, why can’t we do the same thing? High-waisted pants were a big trend in the 1950s, and today, women are embracing their curves with them again. These fashion items have been spotted on men and they look just as chic as women who wear them. Not only do they lengthen your legs, they also broaden your shoulders. Just make sure you have the same size as your girlfriend.
3. Why not you go crazy with your shirt?
To tag an excitement onto a classic men’s shirt, designers have illustrated their crazy minds on them. They have been using vacation shirts as their inspiration and transform them into a contemporary-casual shirt. However, to avoid the cliché and the obviousness, designers replace the florals and coconut trees with something more abstract and crazier-yet-fun to see. Burberry Prorsum and Prada make a great selection of shirt with twisted print. All we have to do is just wait for H&M and Zara to make the “inspired by” version.
4. Why not you shrink your jacket?
Just like high-waisted pants, cropped jackets belong in a girlfriend’s closet, but Carven creative director, Guillaume Henry, cleverly made the cropped trench coat for us. Wearing a cropped jacket could be a little bit tricky as it could make you look like you are wearing your little brother’s jacket. However, with the right fit and styling, it could elongate your silhouette.
5. Why not reach the sky with your shoes?
Men in heels is hardly a news. They have been popping up on the streets of Paris and New York since bloggers like Bryanboy posted photographs of themselves wearing sky-high wedges on their blog. However, if you think those Finsk wedges are too extreme and emasculating, you could start with midget heels like those paraded on the Bottega Veneta Autumn/Winter 2011 menswear runway show — see them here and here.
