When Jen arrived to stay the night on Saturday at around 11 PM, she found me getting ready to do a last-minute sewing project in transforming a thrifted tulle dress into a tulle skirt. The cause behind this madness? I felt like I had nothing to wear for speaking at Sunday’s Texas Style Council Conference. I knew everyone would be dressed to the nines in the spring’s newest trends, palettes, and silhouettes. I couldn’t afford to get more clothes (financially and time-wise) so I decided to complete this project I’ve had on the backburner for a while now. I found this dress with the original tags attached on a 50% off everything sale at a local thrift store and immediately envisioned it transformed into a tutu skirt to pair with casual t-shirts for a Carrie Bradshaw moment or with a corset top for evening events.
Here I’ve paired it with a very special jacket from Dog and Pony and a clearance turtleneck sweater. I was tempted to pair this skirt with just a gray cotton tee but in the end I figured what the heck, I’m known for dressing weirdly over-the-top anyway, and paired it with the jacket. I’m glad I did and also was smart enough to bring some Dog and Pony business cards with me… everyone wanted to know more about the jacket and I handed out so many cards throughout the day! I was even sketched while I was speaking by an attendee. I’m very proud of my friend Star and her Dog and Pony team for their latest vintage reworking projects.
