Last Friday it warmed above 90°F here in the city and didn’t fall too short during the night, unusual for us even after the summer solstice.
The days leading up gave a fair warning and if that wasn’t enough for one to try and dress accordingly, waking up sweating bullets sure scared you into skin exposure.
Thus, I pulled out these bermudas, cuffed them, paired them with an oxford shirt and boat shoes, and went to work as a happy camper designer. Luckily, my job doesn’t entail me to sport suits and coordinates, otherwise I would have continued to perspire in slacks and 2-ply cotton. Not good!
The reason I opted for a light-weight button-down was simply because San Franciscan weather can’t be trusted (being the city-by-the-bay and all); it might be sunny during the day, but the wind can sure wipe you out when the evening approaches. Plus, our office will often mirror the Arctic* despite how warm or cold it is outside, and wearing a shirt with sleeves I can roll down or easily take off was befitting.
Dressing for warmer weather doesn’t mean sacrificing style. To help, remember to pay attention to your color palette (here I went with calmer colors to contrast the heat, not amplify it) and worry less about accessories—the last thing you want is added weight and distractions. Cool, light fabrics with comfy fits work best to let your body breathe.
Note: Wear sunscreen, SPF is sexy!
*I’ve never been to the Arctic. I apologize for using the region as a reference.
