SHN invited Chictopia to the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco to see Mamma Mia! — you know, that super fun filled musical drama that mixes all those hit ABBA tunes you can’t stop yourself from singing along to. We got a VIP backstage tour of the wardrobe and set with the production’s wardrobe supervisor Heather Yerrick.
The Mamma Mia! wardrobe was not shy of upcoming Spring 2012 trends – bright and pastel pieces for the ladies, cute dolly shoes, 70’s inspired jumpsuits, beach swimwear, and an abundance of Hawaiian shirts and Greece vacation-friendly clothes for the boys. Here’s a rundown of the looks that we loved:
METALLIC AND FUTURISTIC
Some standout costume pieces included futuristic silver platform boots paired with bedazzled and jeweled bright jumpsuits worn famously by ABBA and the Donna and the Dynamos. Some costume pieces were over ten years old, others were brand new. To be worn by some of the male cast members as well, we were very impressed as the boots had at least four inches on them. Metallic and neon accents are always a plus for us, so these disco, crazy looking costumes were our favorites.
BRIGHTS AND PASTELS
Among the sunset wedding scene was a refreshing wardrobe full of bright orange and pink spring dresses, bouncy hair, and matching shoes and sandals (worn in monochromatic style of course) for the guests. This was definitely the best dressed portion of the entire show. Some fun dresses were tiered with ruffles and hip hugging – all were full of color.
The men were dressed for a fun vacation at the beach, wearing sneakers, loose tanks, sun hats, and shorts. A weird dream sequence showed the men wearing structured blue wet suits and neon vests that I swear you can find similar versions of at Zara. The Hawaiian shirts are also making a comeback as seeing them all together reminded me of the scenic painting print trend.
In addition to the casual, bohemian wardrobe of the leads Donna, Sophie, and the rest of the female cast at the bride-to-be’s bridal shower, the promiscuous friend Tanya had one of the best styles. Wearing a sky blue and orange patterned dress with a high slit, she looked ready for a chic Grecian getaway.
If you love that 70’s music and the whole Grecian getaway resort look, you’d have a blast seeing Mamma Mia! My my, how can we resist you?
