I knew that the Carolina Herrera show would be a memorable one from the moment I sat down in my 5th row seat at the Lincoln Center Stage. I was almost directly behind and about 6 feet away from the “fab four” of fashion: Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, Franca Sozzani, and Amy Astley. They were seated front row, naturally. And while I was temporarily starstruck, I realized: they, like me, were there to experience something inspiring, something magical. And that we did!
BLACK & BLUE
The first few looks to hit the runway were all about texture. Fur, feathers, knits, velvet, and sequins added visual interest to clothing in shades of black and navy. The “covered-up” trend continues with turtlenecks and scarves.
EAST MEETS WEST
Coming off a trend that was quite popular in the past few seasons, Carolina Herrera showed prints that reminded me vaguely of bonsais and cherry blossom trees. Many dresses and jackets were also cinched with obi-style belts.
SHE’S A BALLER
From the beginning of the show to the final look, we saw many beautiful gowns. They begun, like the other pieces, in hues of grey and blue, and eventually finished in coral.
IN HER OWN WORDS
Carolina Herrera told the Associated Press that her inspiration was “…glamour. The glamourous woman.” She denied any reference to the past in her collection, saying that she designed a modern collection, “a collection for now.”
NOTABLES
This was a high profile show, with many top magazine editors, celebrities, and other fashion personalities—not to mention the top models on the runway! I spotted Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, Emmanuelle Alt, Renée Zellweger, Lee Radziwill, Prabal Gurung, and even New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand.
Supermodels spotted included Arizona Muse, Frida Gustavsson, Ruby Aldridge, Joan Smalls, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Kate King, and Cara Delevingne.
