I’ll be honest: until the season, I hadn’t heard of Porter Grey. I can, however, assure you it is on its way to becoming a household name. Households of more people “in the know,” that is. (And aren’t those the only people that matter in fashion, anyway?) Founded by sisters Alexandra and Kristen O’Neill, this brand is built on classic basics and luxe separates.
The Fall/Winter 2012 collection was shown in a presentation format this season at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Presentations are possibly my favorite type of show: the ability to get up close to the clothing and models offers new perspective, and of course, the opportunity to take way better pictures! It’s wonderful to be able to see all of the little details viewers might miss on the runway, and truly appreciate the impeccable design and craftsmanship of the garments.
So where to begin? Let’s check off the main trends spotted at the show:
>Autumnal earth tones: in line with shows seen thus far during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the color palette consisted of orange, brown, mustard, and red, with hints of purple and blue.
>Leather accents: From a leather trimmed jacket to a leather pocket on a knit short, Porter showed us that you don’t need a complete garment to look cool.
>Small prints: Petite polka dots adorned peter pan-collared blouses, tribal prints were seen worked into dresses and embroidered on a jacket.
>Pleats: Super-small pleats added body and movement to long and short dresses and skirts.
>Peplums: Structured ruffles on the bottom of a black dress touched on a trend that’s proving to be really big this season.
Other notable details included two-tone button downs, metallic-capped oxford shoes, and the soft, impeccably wavy and Olivia Palermo-esque hairstyles on the models.
My verdict: I want pretty much every piece of this collection. The looks were just the right combination of classic and modern, trendy but unique—and as I’m sure you all know, that’s not always easy to come by!
