The sneaker is undoubtedly having a moment. From the cult following of Isabel Marant’s Bekket to the running shoes walking down Raf Simons’ Fall 2012 Menswear show, fashion just got a little more comfortable. While we’re definitely not suggesting to say goodbye to the platform stunners gracing Chictopia’s front page, we are completely open and excited to welcome a variety of options to our fashionable footwear world. Here’s our how-to and style guide about welcoming a new year with some new, more effortlessly comfortable (read: lazy) shoe options to finish off an outfit!
THE HEEL
The most high fashion of high tops, the hidden wedge sneaker heel has gained a cult following of editor-at-large-sized proportions seen running around fashion weeks all around the globe. While not the first of its kind, Isabel Marant’s shoe is obviously the star of the moment. From blogger to model to editor, the sneaker heel provides a bit of comfort, couple inches of height, and a whole lot of statement. Perfection for a model-off-duty look like Annabella’s.
HOW TO WEAR IT
→ A twig-leg silhouette works well with the chunky wedge, go for a skinny pant.
→ Monochromatic outfits give the sportiness of the shoe a 90s feel.
→ Mix up the textures with leather, wool, and cotton; effortless dressing for a statement shoe.
THE ALL STAR
A staple in almost anyone’s wardrobe, the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars are a perfect choice to give an outfit a more casual tone. The shoes, originally made for basketball players, have found their way onto the feet of basically any person on the street. Purchase of basketballs not necessary. The American icon looks best when worn out and beat up paired with anything from tough jeans to a girly collared dress. Take a note from Journalist and assistant, Alex Arskaya-Waitt.
HOW TO WEAR IT
→ Converse work best in classic, solid colors. However enticing, the double tongue and triple laces are probably not going to be the chicest route.
→ Looks best with an outfit that is a bit disheveled. An un-ironed dress and slouchy jacket are great choices.
→ Play with brighter colors, like azure blue or French rose, since the shoe is so basic.
THE IT-KICKS
Supergas are a wonderful way to go completely casual without sacrificing a great look. The sneaker comes in a wide variety of colors that will probably go with anyone’s personality and style (Iris has had the pale pink ones for years!). From favorite blogger, ManRepeller, to blogger favorite, Alexa Chung, the it-girls of style love the Italian sneaker brand.
HOW TO WEAR IT
→ A statement jacket dresses these casual shoes up without having to put too much effort.
→ Sport with similar colors. Pair white Supergas with a pale peach dress or a navy blue pair with dark denim.
→ Keep it a bit messy. Throw on a scarf, slouchy t-shirt, or tousle waves to keep the sneaker combination from looking odd.
THE MAN
Guys can wear sneakers too! Obviously that sentence is true, but now they can do it without being oblivious or obvious. Moving past matching one’s Jordans to their snapback, Andrew Mukamal illustrates how to give typical men’s fashion a context of high fashion. With a tiara on his head and Balenciaga on his feet, this parody of average sport attire feels fresh and fun for fashion now.
HOW TO WEAR IT
→ Choose shoes that are almost “ugly.” Ugly is the new flawless, obviously.
→ Mix up the textures! Cable knit and a fuzzy fur can take a knit from everyday to exciting.
→ Add androgyny and use sneakers with items that could be typically feminine.
