The Man Repeller usually knows how to man repel, but this sweet as sugar skirt is so versatile it can be incorporated into repeller looks and come-hither ones too. The tutu-like skirt is made by Miu Miu and plays on the recent simple-stitch trends of Miuccia Prada. Prada’s Spring 2012 RTW collection debuted some cut-and-stitch bandeaus and skirts, and Miu Miu has a few in their current collection as well. This pattern is one of the easiest to make yourself if you have a sewing machine- it is an absolute beginner level piece. Borrow a machine from your mom, your grandma or a friend and whip up this DIY at 1/100th of the actual retail cost! 1/100th! At this price you could buy a machine and all the supplies for less than the skirt at Miu Miu. There’s nothing repelling about that!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- fabric (satin or lining fabric works best)
- sewing machine and thread
- tape measure
- elastic for the waist band
- scissors
TUTORIAL
[ MEASURE ] – Use your tape measure to measure from your waist to how long you want your skirt to be. Write down this number. We are going to call it “x” for this tutorial.
[ CUT ] – Cut a piece from your fabric that is 60" in length and the height will be X+2"(for top waist band)2"(for hem)1.5"(for each pleat-optional). Ugh, math! I know.
[ SEW ] – Fold you fabric in half length-wise so that it touches right-side to right-side (right-side is the nice side of the fabric). Sew the edges together to create a loop-shaped piece.
[ PLEAT ] – This step is optional. If you want your skirt to look just like the Miu Miu option, create a few pleats. You can do this by folding and tucking the fabric and sewing across.
[ WAIST BAND ] – Cut a pice of elastic the size of your waist + 2". On your skirt, choose which side is the top, and fold it over (outside to inside) to create a band big enough to insert the elastic. Stitch this down all around except for a small hole. Attached a safety pinto the elastic and feed it through your band. Sew the elastic together at the end and sew up the small hole by hand.
[ HEM ] – Fold under the bottom equally all around and sew to hem your skirt.
HOW TO WEAR IT
Not sure if you want to repel or attract? Here are a few options to try with your new skirt:
Try wearing it as a pop of unexpected color and girly-ness with a super grunge look like Positively Melancholy
Keep it sweet and flirty like Fashion Chalet
Or do like the master herself and layer it up with the Man Repeller
