To think that less than a hundred years ago, women were still scorned for wearing the same comfortable leg-wear that men have been able to enjoy for a great deal of the world’s history…
I have a fascination with strong and compelling women. Janis Joplin for example (of Big Brother & Holding Company, the band on my shirt), was an under-appreciated, amazing woman. She had a terrific voice and an amazing sense of style that was at times, ahead of its time. At some point, I hope to recreate one of Joplin’s outfits, but I need to get up the confidence for it. Another woman that came to mind in relation to this outfit was Amy Winehouse. Because of her retro sense of style, this sweater reminded me of her. I decided to base my makeup on Winehouse and her original inspiration: The Ronettes. Amy Winehouse was truly a dynamic character with a beautiful voice. Both of these women did have tragic (and ultimately fatal) flaws, but I think that does nothing but make them more compelling. After all, we all have flaws. At times, we may even forget that we have them, but they’re still there.
I’ve been mainly wearing skirts for my looks because they’re more easy to make look impressive, but I think it’s very important to remember the civil rights aspect to pants, and that women can be both beautiful, delicate flowers and strong-willed and unique.
