Founded in 1945 by French Couturier Madame Carmen de Tommaso, Carven used to be a couture house serving the style of screen stars and royals. Now, the ready to wear focused design house is led by Guillaume Henry and serves modest, forward French fashion to modern style stars like Alexa Chung, Emma Watson, and Carolina Issa. The reinvented brand initially kept hush-hush, gaining momentum and popularity among the fashion set by old fashioned word of mouth. For Spring 2012, they showed their collection on the Paris Fashion Week runway and gained even more die-hard fans. Guillaume Henry’s goal for the brand is to “keep the DNA.” He stays true to the idea behind the clothing but isn’t limited by what the house has had in the past. He continued, “Carven, when she first started, became obsessed with this idea of fresh elegance, and that’s what we want to do.” The modern mixture of proper dressing and youthful edge gives fashion lovers some great inspiration for Fall.
Carven on the Stars
Carven has been popular among the young Hollywood set and the modern fashion darlings on the street style scene. Actresses from Emma Watson to Emma Stone to Anne Hathaway are all known for a youthful, playful, and classic style that completely evokes the look that Carven is known for.
Editor In Carven
The design house has some serious street cred, with major editors sporting their looks. Tank Magazine market editor, Caroline Issa, wore a Carven skirt to fashion week looking stylish, classic, and tough. Leith Clark, editor in chief of Lula Magazine, wore a dusty blue lace frock to Paris fashion week for a more feminine look.
It Girl’s It Brand
Street style star, Alexa Chung, has repeatedly professed her love for the designer and wears Henry’s creations all the time. Last February, Alexa hosted the Barneys New York event to showcase the Spring/Summer 2011 Carven collection. Her easy-elegant style definitely embodies the smart and cool Carven woman.
The List
Carven tips and essentials to get the look on your own!
1. Collar Up – Any shirt with a stiff collar (always buttoned to the top, of course). Even better: contrasting color or fabric to the shirt
2. Mix It – Guillaume’s collections “aren’t first degree sexy,” mix your glam dresses with flats and leather shorts with chunky pattern knits
3. Classic Fabric – Wool, tweed, and leather make for classic garments that give looks a heavier feel.
4. Higher Hem – Shorter skirt lengths balance out the high collar styles at Carven, and keep the style youthful and modern.
5. Ketchup & Mustard – While the colors often evoke clown images, Carven takes the colors and classes them up in deeper hues paired with emeralds and colbalt.
