With kohl-rimmed eyes, bed-head hair in her face, and sky-high stilettos, Carine Roitfeld’s signature look is hard to miss. The super stylist extraordinaire and former French Vogue editor is definitely a style-setter. After all, she did invent that porno-chic aesthetic in the 90s that most fashion ads continue to emulate to this day. Remember those Tom Ford for Gucci days? Styled by the one and only. Speaking of the one and only, W magazine had an entire spread of Ms. Roitfeld who handpicked, styled, and modeled looks from the couture collections in their October issue appropriately titled “One of A Kind” – just in case you missed it!
Before other editors were snapped by street style photographers, Roitfeld was one of the first to be photographed for her chic looks (no surprise there). She’s both a muse and a fashion visionary. So what is it about the iconic Ms. Roitfeld that continues to captivate the fashion world? Well, not only does she have inimitable style, but she also has the ability to make clothes come alive and therefore launch the careers of designers, models, and photographers alike. Her book, Irreverent, has 250 tear sheets and covers from iconic shoots and photographs that solidify this fact. Karl Lagerfeld refers to her as the ideal French woman: she exemplifies glamour, sophistication, and sex appeal all at the same time. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be the best of friends with the world’s finest and most iconic designers/design houses.
As this week’s fashion inspiration, Roitfeld shows us that, even if you stick with your signature look, you can add elements to keep your look fresh and extremely chic. Case in point, Ms. Roitfeld donned an all black head-to-toe leather look for the launch of her “Carine’s World” campaign for Barneys NY during New York Fashion Week in September. Luckily for those of us working upwards the fashion ladder (or credit card limit), we have options to choose from whose price tags aren’t in the thousands.
The Look for Less
1. ASOS Sleeveless leather dress, $98.84.
One of this year’s biggest trends and must have pieces is anything leather. It’s also the perfect time to invest in one for this fall season! Whether it’s a leather dress, skirt, top, or jacket, wearing a leather piece adds a bit of toughness to any look. If wearing an all-leather ensemble is a little out of your comfort zone, no worries! These are options that are just as chic and can be mixed and matched with other items already in your closet.
These dresses from ASOS — short sleeve.. or sleeveless — can be styled with black tights or by themselves, with heels, flats, or boots. For the Roitfeld touch, go for laced-up heels, like these Calvin Klein ones, for a rocker-chic vibe. Since these options have a looser silhouette, no need to fear about looking like a dominatrix. Leather jackets (real or faux) are available at various price points as well. This quilted leather jacket from ZARA is a great updated version of a biker jacket. It also comes in red if you are feeling a bit bold! Take a cue from Roitfeld and wear the jacket as a top. Looking to invest in something that makes a stronger statement? This leather jacket with ruffle trim detail from BCBG Max Azria is another fantastic item that also carries a similar pocket detail as the jacket Roitfeld is wearing. (Act fast, it’s currently 30% off with free shipping!) With these pieces, you are well on your way to looking like a style icon!
