A cool blend of down-south styles with modern-city edge constitute Samantha Abrahart’s line, Southern & City. With such a versatile aesthetic, we at Everybody Is Ugly were definitely intrigued.
I met Sam and her business partner, Erin, this year at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Immediately I knew these girls had a vision, a plan, and a drive to put it into action. Sam actually approached me about getting involved with Chictopia, and I happily agreed to help! I’m excited to introduce Samantha Abrahart, the designer behind blossoming brand Southern & City.
HEATHER BRIGGS: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who is Southern & City?
SAMANTHA ABRAHART: I am only 20 years old, and I am currently studying business marketing at North Georgia College and State University. I was born and raised in London, England but moved to Atlanta, Georgia when I was 12. I met my assistant and fashion vision director for Southern & City, Erin Walsh in high school. We became friends because of our love of fashion; today she helps me with Southern & City and is a big part of the brand!
HEATHER: What made you want to pursue a career as a designer?
SAM: I’ve always had a vision. Even at a young age, I [was] fascinated by fashion styling and trends. Fashion is a means of expression, it’s an art and I’ve always been able to relate to that. I’ve always been captivated by different cultures and their difference in style; when I moved to Atlanta, I experienced a complete different culture of fashion. I decided I wanted to incorporate different cultures and created my line when I was 18.
HEATHER: Describe Southern & City’s aesthetic. What type of girl wears your clothing?
SAM: Southern & City thrives on versatility. Any girl can take a piece of clothing and make it her own and we believe in just that, individuality! Southern & City was built on the idea of incorporating two lifestyles. It fits both the city girl who wears bold, edgy, trends [and] the southern, laidback girl who thrives in comfort. We do not discriminate, but rather embrace all lovers of fashion. Any girl can represent Southern & City as long as she makes it her own.
HEATHER: I love that! So where do you find inspiration for your designs?
SAM: We find inspiration everywhere. Lately, it has been from many different things. Our fall collection was inspired by the Navajo Tribe. There was a quote we picked up on that said, “The Navajo is peaceful, so graceful and unique. They walk with beauty, confidence and courage.” That quote exemplifies everything our fall collection stands for. Uniqueness, beauty, and confidence, as well as being courageous in your fashion sense.
HEATHER: What can we expect for your spring collection?
SAM: Our spring collection is inspired by decades. It is going to be an amazing collection full of crazy prints, colors, and a revolutionary introduction of a new signature piece [for] a women’s closet…a first of its kind! You’ll have to wait and see for yourselves!
HEATHER: Sounds exciting! Thinking of the bigger picture, what are your plans for the future?
SAM: We are going to continue to grow. We are currently based in the southern U.S but are expanding up north and to the west coast. Expect to see more and more of Southern & City in the next few years, we have nothing but bigger and better dreams! We cannot wait to build up a brand that once started as a small dream for us.
HEATHER: And we wish you the best of luck. Any last words for our readers?
SAM: Nothing else but follow your dreams, no matter how big or bold they may be!
