The Nanette Lepore Spring/Summer 2012 runway show was a burst of neon and rock ‘n’ roll with an ample sum of sun kissed tans and neon kissed lips strutting down the runway. The live band, with lead vocals by Sam Bisbee, was dressed head to toe in neon, a clever foreshadowing of what was to come down the runway. Bisbee kicked off the show with his jubilant, rock ‘n’ roll jams, escalating the anticipation for the models to begin coming out in god knows what.
The first model to come out was wearing a bright, neon yellow tie-front top and a tangerine skirt with matching sandals and flower embellished purse. With pushed back, relaxed long hair, tanned skin and purple lipstick that I thought only Lady GaGa could pull off (or could she? not so sure after this show), the feel of Nanette Lepore’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection was fresh and youthful. And with just this first look, every possible fashion week worry was diminished—this was going to be one fun show!
While sitting at the show, relaxing and listening to the super sweet rock jams, I came to two realizations: women everywhere must find a stylish way to incorporate neon into their wardrobes and every fashion show needs a live band.
Some looks from Lepore’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection were:
Neon Neon Neon
Well isn’t it obvious? Lepore was all over that neon trend—even the band was wearing neon. While the first few looks were completely neon, the rest of the collection was a bit more toned down (in Lepore terms, still colorful), at times accenting some of the looks with electric pink stripes or an electric pink belt. While many are saying that wearing so much neon in an outfit is impossible, Lepore made the all-neon-look look wearable for all types of occasions: from sporty, to workwear, to the beach, and to evening, Lepore kept neon feminine while making it limitless for every woman.
Clean and Crisp
With a collection so full of color, Lepore had to keep lines clean. Besides hibiscus printed lace and a houndstooth shorts suit, the rest of the collection was either solid or striped and didn’t have many crazy prints. Instead, Lepore used full skirts and shorts to give the collection more volume while adding sporty zippers and neon accents for that bright, fun touch.
Sheer and Lace
The feminine dresses made of sheer fabric and hibiscus printed lace could all easily be worn in the evening or to a chic gathering. Many of the sheer and lace dresses were in muted blue and pink, worn over tangerine. With neon platform wedges on, the models looked ready to attend one of the most fashionable neon parties in all of history.
Fun Work Wear
Some outfits from the collection looked perfect for work without being too over the top. These were the dress suits and short suits. Houndstooth printed suits in muted corals showed the mature, professional side of the collection without being boring. Every model still had on an accent of tangerine, electric pink or neon yellow to make wearing the suit more bold and fearless.
The show ended with Lepore and her daughter strutting down the runway, sharing a couple of words between each other. Lepore’s teenage daughter looked like she was ready to wear her mom’s Spring collection now as she walked confidently in her bright, acid yellow Doc Martens. During this Spring 2012 fashion week, Nanette Lepore was definitely the brightest of them all.
