Going to Betsey Johnson Spring/Summer 2012 was more entertaining, lively and magical than anything we’ve ever seen and that’s just the street style! From poofy 80s prom dresses to sky-high hats the glittering audience shined almost as bright as the lingerie-inspired looks walking down the runway. With a hot pink gift bags sitting on every chair in the gigantic Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week theater, it was a truly glamorous and playful background for an amazing slew of stylish guests.
1. Nicki Minaj
→ The rapper, famous for her vibrant “Toys-R-Clothes” approach to dressing, was in full form at the Betsey Johnson show. With a lavender beaded pretzel necklace and turquoise afro stuck onto her usual blunt banged look, she had all the attention of fellow guests and photographers alike.
2. Lynn Yaeger
→ We saw the fashion writer multiple times before the show and again during when she was talking to a few very stylish people sitting next to us, which we’ll get to later. According to her NYMag article, Yaeger thought that the show expressed a “cheerful, disarmingly innocent vulgarity” and loved the bright pink gift bag filled with bits and bobs from Betsey Johnson. Back on the subject of street style, we loved her signature ginger bob and Marie Antoinette makeup; a chic monochrome outfit with classic stripes and a pop of color with pink slippers with yellow embroidery definitely didn’t hurt.
3. Jessica Hart
→ Model, Jessica Hart, showed off an amazingly adorable black and white look that was graphic, bold, and a perfect way to go both overstated and understated at the same time. Pattern mixing makes the black and white interesting with hounds-tooth and Missoni-esque zig zag scribbles. Her high side bun was the perfect 80s finish to the look.
4. Patrick McDonald
→ First of all, his colors are flawless. A monochrome-turquoise blue look underneath a bold check blazer and olive green feathered hat is amazing to see both in person and in photos. The fashion consultant was sitting a chair away from us and remarked to Lynn Yaeger (who came to talk to McDonald, Michael Musto, and Lauren Ezersky—who were both dressed amazingly as well) that “the fourth row is the new front row” upon her reaction to their seating assignment. Definitely a treat to watch!
5. Patricia Fields
→ We were sitting directly three rows behind Pat Fields, designer and stylist for shows like Ugly Betty and Sex and The City. Mustering up the confidence to ask for her picture was almost as difficult as trying to find my lost lens cap, but the timely occurrence of both made for an amazing experience! She sported a pop art Marilyn Monroe t-shirt, happy face printed bandana covering her bold red mane, and white blazer.
6. Rosemary Ponzo
→ The costume designer and stylist was dressed to wow with an amazing millinery feat atop her head. Sparkling in gold, blue, and black sequins, the look was all about excess and maximalism which was extremely appropriate for the bright, fun, and colorful show.
7. We caught this girl on the way out, she gave the show “two thumbs up” and we give her outfit the same rating! Perfect for Betsey Johnson she mixed print with print with print with print on tights. Perfection! We love her bold pink lips and bright orange hair as well.
