The Academy of Art University of San Francisco, California prides itself in being the only school to show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week—and they don’t disappoint. Recently graduated designers showed seven small collections that walked the runway of the Theater in Lincoln Center.
SHADES OF GREY
Who: A collaboration between The Italian Trade Commission, Ginie Huang, Zenia Kim, Kate Y.K. Lee, Jessie Jie Liu, Iglika Vasileva Matthews, Tanja Milutinovic, Ilana Dora Siegelman, and Cecilia Q. Xie
What: Strong shouldered looks in muted tones, featuring accents of faux fur and tartan.
Who: Lisa Nguyen and Jen Chen
What: A well-tailored menswear collection in shades of black, white, and electric blue. Many of the pieces showcased interesting dye techniques and cool zipper embellishment.
Who: Sun Young Youn
What: A series of zip-up, ready-for-rain garments made in what appeared to be a clear waterproof fabric, styled with matching sheer tights.
Who: Juhyun Vivi Park
What: Menswear looks featuring lightweight linen pants, button downs, and deconstructed jackets in white and grey.
JUST LIKE LENNON
Who: Dipti Iria
What: An east-meets-west inspired collection, showcasing beautifully metallic thread-embroidered fabric in shades of pale pink, blue, and yellow. Unique silhouettes and the addition of chrome loafer wedges and round John Lennon-esque sunglasses made these looks my favorites of the show!
GOING FOR THE GOLD
What: Menswear that very much reminded me of an Olympian uniform—a combination of striped tanks, sporty jackets, and casual suits in red, white, navy, and tan.
Who: Meredith Acton
What: Delicate and sheer ivory skirts and dresses paired with stark jackets, blazers, and lace-up flatforms.
Celebrities seen at the show included Nigel Barker (and who I believe was his wife, Cristen Chin), Jack Mackenroth (of Project Runway fame), Patrick McDonald, and Robert Verdi.
