The Jenny Packham Spring/Summer 2012 show started out gently, with the soft beat of artist Oh Land’s song, Rainbow, and models sashaying slowly down the runway. A refreshing change from the thumping bass music and stomping models, Jenny Packham showed us that one doesn’t have to use shock tactics to showcase uniquely beautiful clothing—the garments should speak for themselves. And that they did—here are some of the top trends from the show:
One of the first looks to come down the runway set the stage for a crisp, feminine, collection—a stark-in-the-best-way white Chantilly lace dress paired with red lips and orange strappy sandals was chic and unexpectedly sexy. The addition of lace (and beading!) to a pale green dress with sheer sleeves made for a visually interesting texture combination. Another pair of orange sandals was just the right pop of color.
Drop waists and sequin trim gave the show a reinvented 1920s vibe. The model’s glowing skin, sheer underlay and deep-v neckline modernized a light peach dress. A pale blue dress also featured shiny sequin and beading detail, a sheer train, and white strappy shoes. The model’s blunt bangs kept the look from falling into grandma status.
The swishy dress was a big thing this season, and it makes sense—light, flowing fabrics will make for easy, breezy days in the coming (not soon enough) spring and summer months. Done in sheer vibrant turquoise and red tones, among others, the styles were bold and eye-catching. An asymmetrical sleeve was unique, and a long, ruffled skirt showed great attention to detail.
Other notable trends included 3D flower details in rainbow colors and draped asymmetrical hemlines.
Mandy Moore obviously favors designers with a feminine, colorful sensibility (I also spotted her at Lela Rose); when asked what she thought of the show, she said “I really want to go on vacation now, so I would have somewhere to wear all of these gorgeous pieces!”
Also seen backstage: dresses in hues of tangerine, lemon, and lime already wrapped in plastic and quickly zipped into a garment bag; backstage essentials including band-aids, garment tape, pins, and hand sanitizer!
