Project Runway winner, Christian Siriano, has shown that he can handle being the most memorable and most successful contestant of the show. With a shoe collaboration with Payless (anyone who makes claw-esque heels affordable is good in my book) and a new collection every fashion week, Christian Siriano had done well for creating his brand. His penchant for voluminous fabrics, dramatic silhouettes, and history with interning for British Designers (Vivienne Westwood? Check! Alexander McQueen? Check!) definitely showed in his Spring/Summer 2012 collection but instead of his Fall 2011 somber colors and strong dark looks, he shows a fresh new edge that looks more effortless than his previous efforts but retains his signature style we all love.
Melon & Citrus
The color scheme was perfection! A bright retina-burning lime green paired with nude beiges and melon orange-pinks felt fresh and modern against his past collections where gray and dusty pink ruled. The drama of the show was equally expressed in the effortless styling and color pairings.
A Fresh New Look
This Christian Siriano collection was glamorous in all the right places. From casual t-shirts worn with floor length gowns to short dresses with intricate textures, the simple-meets-exuberant vibe was a balance that was apparent throughout the show. Christian Siriano’s feathery details and signature blouses were present, but in a more relaxed way by pairing them with a simpler piece for contrast or rendering them in lighter, sheer fabrics.
Modern Evening
When Raf Simons introduced Jil Sander’s praised “modern couture” with Spring/Summer 2011’s RTW collection, he paired floor length skirts with white t-shirts. Christian Siriano has done the same but for a younger audience who prefers their hair messily waved instead of sleekly slicked. The styling was impeccable. The evening gown + t-shirt look was paired with tortoise shell round sunglasses, a look easily translatable to the trendy, cool girl who pairs her American Apparel t-shirt with a ball gown and throws on her thrifted specs on her way out.
CHRISTIAN SIRIANO Spring/Summer 2012
A packed room with an exposed brick entrance gave the show a grungier feel that was an apparent difference to the all-white pristine look of Lincoln Center’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents. The runway at Eyebeam Studios gave the right setting for the right girl that Christian Siriano was aiming for, a cool and tough vibe that wouldn’t be the same in the stark tents. With the McQueen influences obvious, Christian Siriano served up a collection that gave those Couture-qualities and high-impact drama to a youthful crowd cheering for it.
