It’s that time of year again! No, not the summer sales (although, those are an exciting part of the season), it’s time for the Fall 2011 campaigns. Our favorite so far is the Lagerfeld designed and photographed, Chanel Fall 2011 Advertising Campaign. Starring for her fifth consecutive time in Chanel’s adverts, Freja Beha Erichsen shows off Fall’s celebration of both Coco’s icons and Karl’s signatures.
CATS BY CARINE
The campaign is said to be an unexpected twist in the line of Chanel’s advertising look. Even though Karl is still behind the camera, the freshness and edginess needed after years of desaturated landscapes shines through. Carine Roitfeld, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, heightens the fantasy, ups the playfulness, and injects sexuality into the Chanel look.
Freja sports masks, avant garde almost drag-inspired makeup, and camellia flower cat ears in an effortlessly chic way that brings Chanel into the modern and youthful set of today’s cool crowd.
NO MORE FIELDS FOR LAGERFELD
Instead of very widely shot landscape photos, this campaign focuses very tightly on the setting of a Parisian photo booth. The grungy feel and complementary colors of green and red work with the darker vibe of the Fall 2011 collection. The photo booth also makes perfect sense for the playful styling by Carine. Usually the goofyness of costumes and a photo booth can seem tacky, but the undoubtedly luxe and artistic look of the campaign feels more modern than mockery.
CHANEL FALL 2011 REVAMPED
Karl Lagerfeld always puts on a spectacle for the Chanel shows every season, and the Fall 2011 one was no exception. Through a shining light tunnel, a chain of grungy girls clad in charcoal burn Chanel suits walked out into a post-apocalyptic runway of smoking stones and bleak forests. Season after season, Karl takes a theatrical and strong narrative and throws it out like it’s last season’s trash. He puts his clothes in a different context and shows just how strong they are. From each show to campaign, Chanel has gone from an iceberg to New York, from Marie Antionette’s country home to bull-fighting Spain, and this season, from the apocalypse to a photo booth.
