How high can you go? High heels can project many different attitudes and connotations—sexiness, professionalism, and so on. But is there a limit for your heel height based on your age, how tall you are, or what the occasion is? We’re breaking it down.

Your age
We’ve all heard about Suri Cruise’s extensive shoe collection, which includes multiple pairs of heels. Okay, I get it. When I was a little girl I liked to play dress-up too. Granted, her heels only look to be about 1-2 inches, but are they really appropriate for a girl of five?
Age is an important factor when deciding how high one’s heels should be, or if they should even be wearing heels at all. Many girls start in high school, easing in to heels by wearing them to dances and formal events. This is definitely a good path to follow, starting off with 1 or 2 inches, and working your way up. I also recommend starting with wedges, as they are much easier to walk in.
Your height
We’ve all known that girl: She’s over 5’9" and won’t wear heels because she’s afraid of looking awkward, gawky, gargantuan. She can’t be taller than her boyfriend. She’s really just more comfortable in flats. If you’re that girl, I say, wear those five inch platforms anyway! (Unless you really are more comfortable in flats). Chictopians agree, heels make your legs look great, make you stand up straighter, and boost your confidence as well. You should wear whatever you want to wear, regardless of what other people think about it. I know, easier said than done, right?
Check out Youtube beauty & fashion guru Carly’s video for tips on how to be tall and confident (in heels!).
If you’re a shorter girl, heels will obviously make you taller and help you to stand out. For example, if people don’t take you seriously in the workplace because of your height, try a pair of heels. They can make you look more professional and put you at eye level with your co-workers, to establish a feeling of equality.
Your confidence
So you’ve heard this one before: what you wear and how it’s seen by others really depends on your confidence. But it’s so true! Think you can’t rock the Jeffery Campbell Litas? Think again! So they’re five inches tall. If you love them, that’s all that matters (and they’ve become a fashion blogger staple!)
The occasion
Of course, what’s appropriate can be totally circumstantial, and stilettos are probably not always best for every occasion. A general guide to heel height:
For school and casual events: up to 3.5 inches
For work: up to 4 inches
For going out and formal events: 4 inches and up!
However, I’ll say it again: rules are meant to be broken, and it’s all about confidence! When you feel great, you’ll look great!
