A major warm weather trend that has been popping up all over blogs, as well as here at Chictopia, is shorts (denim and otherwise) that are so high cut that pockets are exposed. Trendy though they may be, sometimes they can look downright tacky. If exposed pockets are for you, read on to see how to keep it chic.
Avoiding Tacky
A problem that quickly turns exposed pocket shorts from trendy to tacky is how short these cut-offs have to be in order for the pockets to show. If you are planning on making your own do-it-yourself pair from an old pair of jeans, make sure that you leave enough fabric on the back that you aren’t exposing your derrière for all the world to see (as in the example photo), and enough fabric in the front that your panties aren’t on parade.
In order to keep this very sexy look from veering towards the undesirable skanky side, it is probably a good idea to keep your top half relatively modest, unlike our friend in the photo who is wearing a bustier. Crop tops, tiny tanks and bra tops are also probably in the category of what to avoid if you want to keep your look from sliding down the slippery slope to tackiness.
Also carefully consider the shoes you wear – stilettos and “hooker” boots in combination with shorts this teeny are a surefire way to find yourself well on your way to tacky town.
Keep it Chic
You may be wondering how to try this trend an still keep your look firmly planted on the chic side. There are a variety of members of the Chictopia community who are a fantastic illustration of how to wear the exposed pocket trend and still look classy and chic.
Majka paired her exposed pockets with a long-sleeved striped tee and fedora, while The Vagabond styled up her own short-shorts with a tucked in yellow blouse, socks and chunky heels. For another spin on this shorts trend, Elenita kept things a bit more covered up with black tights, a lace blouse and blazer. These ladies along with many others in the Chictopia community are a great source of inspiration if you are looking for ways to incorporate a classier exposed pocket look into your summer wardrobe repertoire.
Some surefire ways to keep your look trendy and chic are:
- Keep it covered up on top – tiny tanks and crop-tops are a no go
- Wear sandals, flat shoes or boots, chunky heels or wedges – no to stilettos!
- Too short is tacky – Remember, it’s the pockets that should be exposed – keep it classy ladies! No one wants to end up on People of Walmart
- If all else fails, tights! – Don’t be afraid to throw on a pair of coloured tights underneath to change up the look
If your snipped DIY version of this summer trend ends up too short, not to worry. There are some ready-made versions available from the likes of Hudson, Current/Elliott, Citizens of Humanity and more.
