“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” – Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent couldn’t have described our recently awarded Chictopia’s Style Icon, Cityofbugs better.Though we know her for her hats, floral pieces, and wedges, she’s got a lot of spunk behind those photos! It’s no wonder that she’s won over 500+ Chictopians’ hearts through her playful, versatile looks and admirable individuality. Let’s get to know Harriet a bit more and her fashion-loving style!
What captivated you to join Chictopia? Also, can you tell us how you chose the name “Cityofbugs?”
I really can’t remember how I came across Chictopia – I think I was searching for something on Google. When I found it, I was so amazed at everyone’s beautiful outfits and how inspiring it was! I joined up immediately (under a different account to the one I have now.) but I didn’t post anything – I just commented. I went away from Chictopia for a while, but when I came back I knew that I was ready to start posting outfits! I made an account under a new name – “cityofbugs.” City of Bugs is a beautiful song by one of my favourite bands, The Cribs. It was just a song I was listening to a lot at the time I guess, but it’s still one of my faves now.
I’ve been rooting for you to become one of the Style Icons for Chictopia! How does it feel to be part of this elite club?
Thank you, Crystal! I was really honoured when I was chosen as a Style Icon, I never dreamt of becoming one! It’s a great feeling to know that people love your style, and it puts a huge smile on my face when I found out. All the other Style Icons seem so chic and wonderful compared to me; it’s strange to be part of the same group as them! It’s quite surreal, so thank you, Chictopia!!
You’re welcome, Harriet! It also seems that you’ve recently started a blog, titled This Charming Style. What will you be covering in your blog?
This Charming Style will be covering exactly what it says – Charming Style! It will mostly be my own day to day outfits, but when I get more time I would really like to ask some other people if they will let me style them so I can put them on my blog too. It would also be fun to include some male outfits on there, but we will see. I also want to include other lovely bloggers, giveaways, and a shop. I just need to find the time!
You definitely have a signature style that can be spotted a mile away! I see that you love to wear hats, skirts, and tights. Any tips for Chictopians on finding their own “signature style?”
Oh, thank you! I am really happy now that I have found my signature style, but I’m not sure how it came about! Just keep trying different and new things, even if it’s not something you would normally go for. You will know when you put an outfit on if it feels really YOU or not. I always think it’s good to take the music you listen to as influence, and of course always look to other fashion bloggers for inspiration!
Speaking of inspiration, has living in Britain influenced the way you think about fashion?
Living in Britain has most definitely influenced the way I think about fashion. I am really proud of British fashion; it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of. Everything is an influence from the music, the seaside, the cities – even the weather! You MUST be prepared for Britain’s unpredictable weather…
The weather seems to be different than the states. Have you ever been here? If so, how was the experience?
I have only been to the states once, and I loved it! I went to New York City last December, and it was the best place I have ever been. I love cities anyway, because everywhere you look, something interesting is going on. New York City just amazed me – the people, the smells, the buildings, the shopping (of course!), the food – everything was so interesting! I would love to go back there, but I would also like to visit other cities, too – San Francisco looks amazing.
You’ve mentioned before that you want to be a stylist! If you could, which 3 people would you style?
Ooh that’s a tough one! I’ve always wanted the chance to style men as it’s not something I’ve ever done. I’d love to style The Strokes – that would be pretty amazing (although they are all very stylish enough as it is!). I’d also love to style the amazingly gorgeous and quirky Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. Oh, I know! I would love to style Russell Brand. That would be so fun!
With your awesome styling skills, what do three to four staple items that every Chictopian should have in their closet?
1. A decent pair of wedge boots. Everyone knows I love my wedges – they are comfy and can jazz up an outfit in a second.
2. A hat that suits you – buying a hat was the best thing I did. It’s great to see that more and more people are wearing hats these days.
3. The perfect floral dress. If you don’t know what to wear, you can always go to your trusty floral dress. They are easy to style differently so you can still wear them to suit you. Plus, they are great for most occasions.
Lastly, if you could switch places with a celebrity, who would it be?
I can honestly say that I wouldn’t want to switch places with anyone! I love being me and am very excited for what the future will bring, although Alexa Chung can switch wadrobes with me if she wants to (and I’ll have her boyfriend Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys too!).
Thanks Harriet for letting us to get to know you a bit more! If we could, we would love to style Russell Brand, too!
